Problems with Orange unlocking iPhone 3GS

Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice for my next step. Here is my situation...

I have had my iphone contract for 2 years with orange, it ended on 9th November. On 10th November I tried to put in my Tesco mobile sim card. It didn't work, I realised the phone was locked so I called Orange who said it would cost £20.43 and take up to 30 days...

10th December - No unlock code, called orange who said there has been a delay with the manufacturer and it could take upto another 7 days.
17th December - No unlock code, called orange again who said it would be 24-48 hours
19th December - No unlock code, called orange, I was told a supervisor would call me with the code within 2 hours.
19th December - No call back, no unlock code. I rang again to be told it would be upto another 48 hours.
Today - No unlock code.

I have a feeling when I call them today they will tell me it will be another 48 hours but this is just not good enough. I have had no phone for nearly 6 weeks and I'm getting really frustrated.

This is not the only problem I have had with Orange. I actually don't know how they are still in business, in my experience they cannot get anything right!!

Please help

Orange (or any network) have to log the unlock with Apple. They then unlock through iTunes (you have sync'd with iTunes to check it's now been done I take it?).

If Apple are running slow, there's not much Orange can do, they don't have any other way of getting an iPhone unlocked !

Why are you making a presumption that it is Apple who is running slow, not Orange? How can they promise 48 hours after wasted 6 days, then 48 hours again after 8 days if it is beyond their control?

You could be be right. Orange have shed so many staff due to the EE merger, it could be the cleaners running the backend office by now!

I also thought the op 'might' be thinking she'd be sent a code rather then letting iTunes do the unlock by the way she wrote?
  • Hi, thanks for the replies. I was told by orange that I would recieve a code via email, they have checked and confirmed my email address on every call and on one occasion I was advised that a supervisor would call me with the code I needed so I assumed it was something I was going to have to enter into the phone myself to unlock it.

However I update my phone regularly to add music and I have updated my phone in iTunes various times over the 6 weeks so I have just tried the new sim and it still wont accept it :-(

    iPhone are unlocked via iTunes.

The network logs the request with Apple, who action it on their system and then when you next sync iTunes unlocks the phone. For most other phone it is a code which they email of text to you.

Sounds like Orange don't know what they're talking about (or at least the CS agent you've spoken with). Looks like you might have to call them again, sorry!

Take a back up of your phone, restore to factory settings, then restore from your back up, and hey presto if the request has gone in your phone will be unlocked

You don't need to do that: Just put in a different SIM and plug into iTunes.

OP Jon 01 is right they don't give you a code
its done though iTunes like was said But Orange should still email you or text you to let you know its unlocked

i have unlocked a couple of iPhone thought O2 they normally text you to tell you when its unlocked and then you go to iTunes and update your phone it will then come up in iTunes that it is unlocked

Sounds like Orange are giving you the run around
Also O2 said its up to 30 days to unlock but both of mine were done in about 4 days then saying that we are on Christmas now so could take a little while longer but not 6 weeks.

I spent 6 weeks trying to get Orange to unlock a 3gs , they originally said " £20 and unlocked in 20 to 25 days", they came up with excuse after excuse for the delay, after 6 weeks again rang them and spoke to someone who said "the unlock request isn't even on the system so I'll request it now and will be up to 30 days"

    Unbelievable
