I recently signed up to the HD package and i'm struggling to see the difference tbh. We have a 46" full HD TV (1080p) but it doesn't really make a whole bunch of difference. We signed up as the £100 of M&S vouchers we received for the upgrade essentially meant it'd cost £1.92 per month and i couldn't see the harm in trying it for that price, wouldn't bother again at full price though, not worth it.0

Sky has 3m HD customers each paying £10 per month. That £360m a year income from HD.
Now when do YOU think Uncle Rup will give away £360m a year?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Basically the HD subscription goes to subsidise contribution and uplinking for the channels on the platform otherwise many just couldn't afford it, some even get a kickback from the HD sub too (ITV2,3 and 4 for example). I personally don't see it becoming free any time soon because of this and, like those who've mentioned they can't see the difference, I think Sky are now loosing a fair few HD subscribers because of this. My partners parents were paying for HD for 9mths before I came around and spotted the TV connected to the STB with a SCART cable!!0
