I've stayed at the boutique hotel The Grange in central York before. Beautiful, top quality hotel that I would highly recommend :happyhearbut obviously doesn't suit everyone's budgets. Have also stayed at Claxton Hall Cottage B&B (about 10 minutes outside of York), which was fantastic although a different experience to The Grange and obviously much cheaper. Hth x

If you want a hotel, rather than a budget hotel try the Novotel, great for town and quieter than some because you have an inner door on your room and therefore get less corridor noise (ask for a river view too). If you can travel by train look for cheap deals in advance, the taxi from the station to a hotel will be cheaper than paying to park while you're here. It's a fantastic city.
I had to smile at this,
When we went to Picadill Travelodge we were asked if we wanted a river view, yeah, brilliant, were woken up at 5am at a cacophony of sound from the ducks and swans from then on and never got another wink of sleep. lolmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for that, often in York and been down Stonegate many a time and never even knew about this place."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I second eating at Del Rios too, it's just across the road from Bar Convent, very convenient to fall out of, and into your bed ! We ate in the little courtyard at the back one lovely warm summer night, you'd never know it was there !0 -

You could park in a street just outside (south bank or fishergate) and walk in. Alternatively get friendly with a local (wink wink nudge nudge) who would be kind enough to supply you with some local parking passes and park for free! (pm me if you like).Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

Please don't do this. I am fed up to the back teeth of tourists, workers and day visitors doing this outside my house, blocking me in. Some local B&Bs even give their visitors a map round to my road so that they avoid having to give them a parking permit
I would heartily recommend the Bar Convent as a B&B though. Hotel 53 is basic but couldn't get much more central.
Also consider Meltons Too as a bistro, or Meltons restaurant (not cheap) for food.
If you're driving for the day then you could use P&R but you can't park overnight there.
As for attractions, we've got a Big Wheel again now, in the grounds of the Royal York Hotel next to the station.
Also the Yorkshire Museum and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey (ever read Sovereign by C J Sansom? It's set there). Art gallery, Minster (not cheap unless you go in to pray or for a service, in which case it's free). St Michael le Belfrey church where Guy Fawkes was baptised.
Jorvik and Dig for archaeology stuff. Castle Museum too. Quilt Museum. A walk round the walls is always interesting.
If you're here in the next few weeks, consider the Panto. If you can get tickets at the Theatre Royal you'll see a treat, with the 33rd year of Berwick Kaler as the Dame ...

Went to York today and I made a point of looking for it, there is another beer shop but with a Thai restaurant upstairs. Walked a bit further down and there it was. Went in for a look but it was lunchtimee and so full there were no seats available. Shame, I would have loved to have sat and socked in the atmosphere. Lovely place, quaint and such a lovely feeling in there. Will defo go again away from the lunch time.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
