I live about 20 miles away from York, its my favourite place in England, and there is so much to do.
York Boat, Castle Museum (excellent) National Railway Museum, ghost walks etc. etc. etc.
There are literally thousands of hotels in York, in a full range of prices. Theres a Travelodge, Premier Inn, as well as loads of B & Bs.
Ive booked for my daughters wedding next year a little b&B 15 minutes walk to the town Centre. It's called Cumbria House, it does have a web site and the prices are pretty reasonable. £30 per person for bed and breakfast, good reviews too. Slug and Lettuce if you like that sore of thing is half price food every Monday, Have a look on the York website. You'll love it and will want to go back time after time.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

A couple of friends of ours just had a weekend in York at the start of December. They stayed at a place called Hotel 53, they stayed there last year as well as they like how it's really close in to town and within walking distance of the town centre and all modern and newish.
In terms of attractions, York is great. There are some nice Antiques Centre, the Railway Museum is a must and it's free! Generally wandering around is very nice especially with the river, cobbled streets, gardens and the walls.0 -
House of trembling madness is excellent for food & drink and a lovely little pub above a beer shop on Stonegate :-) well recommended!
I didn't realise I was near you McKneff! *waves*

The link is great, I didnt know it existed, I'll have to call in for a drink and a snack next time we're in York, which hopefully will be this week sometime, getting over a broken rib so I'm having to take each day as it comes and see what I feel like.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The food is excellent - they cook it with beer out of the taps right in front of you.
It's a little short on space but is an amazing building and they always have interesting beers on! The photos on that link make it look a lot bigger than it really is!Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
I recommend https://www.bar-convent.org.uk it's a 15 min walk into the centre of York. We've stayed there loads of times, it's a working Convent with lovely spotlessly clean rooms. There's a Cafe and the full english is well worth the £4.50 extra ! We've also had lunch there too, the food is really good. I live about 20 miles away too and must have been hundreds of times but still look forward to trip there.0

Bar Convent is walking distance from the train station. If we drive we park at the Pay and Display in Nunnery Lane, if we're staying overnight it's £12, you can pay by mobile phone.0 -

Excellent pub suggestion, I live in York and I'll echo that. I'd also recommend eating at Del Rio's. If you want a hotel, rather than a budget hotel try the Novotel, great for town and quieter than some because you have an inner door on your room and therefore get less corridor noise (ask for a river view too). If you can travel by train look for cheap deals in advance, the taxi from the station to a hotel will be cheaper than paying to park while you're here. It's a fantastic city.Officially in a clique of idiots0
