Things to do in Norwich/Norfolk???

Can anyone recommend things to do in the Norfolk area over 10th to 14th Feb please? We are two adults staying at the Travelodge, (£15 deal:j ), in the centre of Norwich and will have use of car. We are looking more for 'hidden gem', 'off the beaten track' things that might not be in the Tourist Info Centre. We love walking, galleries, museums, markets etc. Would love a trip to the coast but which bit? Especially need a couple of good places to eat in the evening, preferable in Norwich or within easy reach, (one a 'money-no-object' sort of place to celebrate a birthday!).
Any ideas and suggestions would be very welcome as I'm not feeling very enthusiastic at the moment....keep thinking of how Noel Coward summed up the area..... 'very flat'!!!!
TIA

Hiya dorsetmiss
It might be very flat, but that means it's great for walking and cycling (though it did make doing a hill start on my driving test a bit un-challenging!).
Norwich is a fab city for just mooching about - great shops, coffee shops, pretty buildings etc. Things to see in the city centre include the Castle Museum (which is fab) and the Cathedral. Great places to eat are Adlards (which is michelin starred & therefore quite pricey), and Delia's restaurant at the football ground (I've not eaten there, but have heard good things about it). My favourite place for lunch is an old fashioned burger place called Captain Americas (through a tiny doorway opposite Jarrolds, the department store). At the coast to the north, Holkham beach is beautiful - it's the one at the end of Shakespeare in Love - and there are lots of pretty little villages nearby.
Have a great time!0 -
Oooh thank you Chelinda...feel a bit more optimistic about the trip now.
Ermmm...would 'Delia' be the Saint Delia of freshly ground black pepper and cranberry fame :eek:Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly!0 -
I love Sheringham - lovely little place on the coast with a fabulous cliff top walk - really lovely. I think the direct train from Norwich is about 25 mins (it's the end of the line).0

Norwich...I love it. While in Norwich check out Elm Hill, Tombland and a lot of the streets around there. Just a few minutes walk out of the city centre but some nice shops....also around the cathedral. It has a very nice cafe there too. Try some of the broads....Ranworth has a nice church of which you can go up the tower. Hickling is nice all around the waters edge. There is a place which costs a few pounds to get in each called Fairhaven Garden Trust near South Walsham which has some nice walks around it and a cafe for a well deserved drink.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

I would defintely move to Norwich!
I live in Essex and me and my boyfriend stayed up there for two days last year and we both had such a good time! Loads of botique style shops, cafes, pubs and its really pretty by the river! You can walk or cycle around and you just generally get a warm feel about the place!
There is something for everyone! You should have a walk about and find nice resturants and places that you just happen to come across! That way it will be personal and special to only the both of you!
Hope you have a wicked time there!wins 2008: nada0 -
We moved to Norwich from London five years ago and still love it to bits. The city is small, buzzy and walkable. Good Theatre, Movies, music, clubs. Good pubs, coffe bars, bars and restaurants. Our favourites include Last Wine bar, Adlards and Tatlers but there is something for every taste and budget. Coast is 30 mins away (Cromer-- nice pub Lunch at Red Lion or lovley new Cafe overlooking sea at the new Lifeboat Museum) You can walk over the hills or along beach in either direction.
If you like walking great beach walks at Holkham or Wells are about an hour from Norwich (good pub "Victoria" at Holkham and others on the Buttlands in Wells ). My favourite beach walk is Winterton where the Fisherman's Rest does good pub grub. Blakeney is a nice spot for birdwatching or taking a boat out to see the seal colony (White Horse pub does great food). Red Lion at Stiffkey just along the coast is also v good. Holt is a nice little country town for mooching and eating and has a country park. Old railways from Aylsham and Sheringham. Sheringham Country Park very nice for walking and you can go all the way to the coast if you want.
You could also take a boat trip on the Broads, either hire a day boat (Wroxham or Horning) or go on one of the organised tours from Wroxham.
If you like country houses both Blickling and Felbrigg are near and you can walk in extensive grounds free or also see the house and gardens for a fee if you want.(Buckingham Arms at Blickling is good for pub food).
There's so much to see and do we're still discovering new things and places all the time. You won't be disappointed. Definitley worth popping into the tourist office at the Forum in centre of town, they are very helpful and should be able to advise in wahtever direciton your interest lies.
It may be worth checking the Eastern Daily Press (EDP) websites for walks pub restaurant recommendations etc at https://www.edp24.co.ukJust because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
Been some years since I moved away, but heres my ha'pennys worth. Take some time to pop up to St James Hill, at the top of Ketts Hill. There is a great view of the city.
Pedros mexican in Chaplefield park is an institution. The Fat Cat is a little out of the city, but ranked in the top ten pubs in the country by CAMRA.
Norfolk is slow, slow, slow, so make the most of the laid back attitude, and don't get impatient when driving up there."Don't critisise what people look like, how they speak, where they are from, and what they are called. They cannot help it.
Do critisise what they say, and what they do, especially if what they say is different to what they do. They can help that"

If you like museums, check out the bridewell museum, off London Streeet(local history)and the castle.
The castle museum used to do tours of the battlements, great views of the whole of Norwich up there, and the dungeons, complete with prison cells, although I suspect both tours have been stopped due to health and safety in this great age we live in.
Norwich market is good for nozing around, there's a good vinyl record stall at the back.0 -
Theres a good science museum there called Inspire.
Other than that you could give Lowestoft a look (sorry I feel I HAVE to publicise the place :rotfl: ). A lovely seaside town with lots of shops, pubs and cafes and the seafront really clean and near the town centre.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040
