I really need some help to claim back two £30 charges on my abbey account. I have phoned them this morning and the lady has refunded £120 charged for standing orders totaling £8.50, but said she couldn't refund the other two as it is down to a problem with pay-pal!

I made a payment (instant bank transfer) to ebay on th Jan and one to a seller on the 9th, both payments on the pay-pal on-line history said completed on the 9th.
So off i went and cleared my bank so i could go shopping.

Now i have the bank statement saying the money wasn't taken out until 11th(for the payment on the 7th) and 12th(for the payment on the 9th).

According to pay-pal it takes 7-9 working days for the transaction to be completed and i 'have obviously misinterpreted the meaning of the completed status ma'am'. what dictionary she had been looking in is beyond me!!

anyway i wasn't aware of this (the only place i can find this info is in the FAQ section, nowhere in the terms and conditions)and even if i had been the status was completed.

i have asked if they will refund it but they are saying that i am the one to blame because i didn't leave sufficient funds in the account for the payments that i had requested.

can anybody please tell me what else i can do the charge is due to come out in 7 days and i know i wont have the money to pay it, so another charge will be added!

They are right I'm afraid :(

Just because it says completed at Paypals end, doesn't mean it's completed at the banks end. Paypal are just letting you know they have completed their side of the deal, ie, accepting the funds.

Think about it ~ if you pay for something on e-Bay with Paypal, the payment to the seller is instant but it doesn't come straight out of your bank account instantly does it?

Same as if you are buying over the internet, you can pay for something and it will say transaction complete/order completed etc, but the money doesn't come out of your bank account that second.

Have a note pad next to the PC/laptop and anytime you pay for something online, note it down and deduct it from your bank balance ~ that way you won't make the same mistake again :)

i have paid for things online using my visa electron and it does deduct from my available account balance straight away, but my point is that it stated processing then compleated. I cant find any terms and conditions to back this 7-9 working days so is it legal?

I realise that this is probably nowhere near the amounts some people are trying to reclaim and may seem a small amount but I would like your opinions please.

Paypal have charged me £14 for a "reversed transaction".This means that I attempted to withdraw money from my Paypal Account to my bank account. However, I had overlooked the fact that I had closed the said bank account and had forgotten to update this in my Paypal account profile. The transaction was therefore unable to be completed and the money was returned to my Paypal account when the £14 fee was also slapped on.

I fully accept that it is my fault but the fee seems a bit harsh and excessive just for this one slip up.

I would be interested to hear your views on whether you agree with me that I should follow this up?

    Hi all,

I am trying to work out what I can do in this situation...

I have an old account I opened when I was 16 (it's a 16-18 visa electron account) which I have linked to paypal and I am now 18 and opened another account in February (a normal VISA) which I now use as my main account...

Anyway the point is I had a few hundred pounds in the Electron and have slowly been spending it and on the 27th I used it to pay for an item from eBay worth £25 which eBay and paypal both state as Paid and completed.

Yesterday, I received a letter (dated 1st Aug) stating that the payment failed and their going to charge £39 which will be collected on the 8th of August.

Now, I admit I should have been keeping an eye on the amount that was in this account so I knew whether or not the payment would pass or fail but really I thought there would have been about £30 left which woud have been enough - and paypa does state it's complete?.

Also, I did'nt know until I looked no their site yesterday that they charge ban charges when the customer is 18, and this being a basic account I feel this is unfair they don;t give you a full visa card but they charge ful bank charges

Anyway, would it be possible for me to cancel this charge before it is collected or could I reclaim it ?.... I would'nt mind paying the correct amount of value for them informing me of this but £39 for a letter is just theft I feel.

I'm going to go into the bank tomorrow and see if it has cleared or not but any advice on how I should hande this situation ?

Thanks !(sorry for the lenght and appearance of this:o )

If this is your first charge, just telephone the bank and ask them politely to remove the charge. They will do this once or twice and im sure in your case they will.

Hi Hughie thank for your reply :)

What should I exactly say to them though ?

I don't really know how I would approach this with them ?

Just say to them that a mistake was made somewhere on your part and you honestly thought you had enough money in your account to cover the payments coming out. Tell them you have never let it happen before, and will not again.

If they dont suggest they will cancel the charge, ask them too. If that fails, which it used to work for me before i got beyond that point, put the phone down and ring again. One operator is different to the next.

I bet they say they will cancel it when you explain to them straight away. Ring them and let us know what they say.
Im no expert or anything, just working on previous experience.

Hi, thanks I've went into the bank as I am not a phone banking customer (thats another problem I ned to deal with) and they did not cancel it so I'm just going to call and see if I can talk to an operator - hopefully this will work out ok....

    I'll keep this posted :)

    Hi,

thanks for your help I have just got off the phone to a operator who said that I could get a refund as a "Goodwill" gesture which is great !

This has made me think more about this situation (although my Gran and Mum are also in the process of reclaiming their charges) but before I myself got this bank charge I could not fully imagine what its like to have such an amount of money taken from me unfairly (and thats just one charge) but after this incident I can only imagine what it would be like to have lost hundreds or even thousands ! to these charges... not a nice thought :(

I would like to wish the best of luck to you Hughie (and every one else fighting the batte against these charges) and hope you are successful :)
