my partners bank has just charged us £76 for 2 direct debits that came off yesterday, 1 for £3.99 and the other for £4.20 (xmas pressies on the cheap). Well fair enough, i didnt have the money in yesterday, but since it was both from the same company (paypal) i thought the least they could do was charge me once, not twice. It has left my family with just over £100 for the week. Any immediate advice, i am already in the process of taking my own bank to court etc, but wondered if there was any other way the bank might immediately refund. A while ago, they did refund 1 charge as their "1 and only goodwill gesture" so that wont work this time.

my advice would be to be careful not to spend money that isn't there....Indecision is the key to flexibility

I have been with the HSBC bank since 1995, I have a current account which has a £400 overdraft limit.
In september I went overdrawn in my current account for the first time in years to the amount of £599 (£199 over my limit) I was overdrawn for a period of 20 days (all in september), in this period 4 other amounts came out of my account £50, £20, £16.14p and £37.12p taking me to £672.79 for each of these amounts I was charged £25
On the 5th November I was charged £100 ,,,,0 -
i am not disputing the fact that we did not have the money in the account, although actually the money was there in the account when i made the paypal purchases, it just took them a few days for the transaction to go through.
Am just trying, really, to ask for some friendly MSE advice.
I did the two payments in one transaction, so am disputing the fact that am getting 2 charges. Think that £76 is a bit steep for an £8 payment, that they didnt even pay.
Havnt spoken to bank yet as in partners name-but he will do that 2mrw.
Will post and let u know outcome.
Thanks to all those helpful replies

so i sent them an email asking why they charging me and they told me it was a saving account and PayPal does not allow Direct Debit for Savings Accounts hence the £14.00 fee.
but how come paypal was able to send me money to verify my saving account by direct debit but not when i want my money from paypal to my esaving abbey account?
did you thing i'm able to reclaim by £14 money back?
thank you.0 -
You might struggle. I recently set up a PayPal account for a member of my family and there are warnings all over about accepting charges if you enter any incorrect information. Somewhere in the user agreement, you would have ticked a box to say you accept, but unlikely to have read (nobody does) that they did not allow your kind of account.
If your paypal account has been set up for some time then you may not have had these warnings. I cant remeber them when i did mine 3-4 years ago. If this is the case then you may be able to claim that back.
First thing to do is ask them. If they say no examine the reasons why and have another go.0 -
folks if you have any amount of brain cells keep well away from paypal
they keep trying to set up direct debits on my current account for no reason wot so ever the bank have asked me to go to the police as they have no instructions etc from paypal

i going to send an email requesting my £14 fee back as nowhere did it says it must be a current account, it even have a choice of a saving account or current account to withdrawn money from. as long as my saving account accept direct debit/electronically transferred then it should be fine.
thank you for your help0 -

This is just a case of not reading the terms and conditions of what you signed up for. paypal require the seller to be able to prove delivery in cases where the buyer does not receive their goods. This requirement to prove delivery is quite clear and the allowable methods are shown here:
https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_help-ext&eloc=1900&loc=1896&unique_id=95937&source_page=_home&flow=
Therefore paypal is not suitable, and should never be used for items that are collected.
Scammers do try it on in the hope they will find somone who doesn't understand the paypal requirements and unfortunately they found you.
Items to be collected, whether small ads Loot, or ebay are not suitable for paypal and I'm sorry you got caughtby a scam. If ou want more tips on safe trading come and have a read of the ebay and other auctions board.
