Visa/Mastercard Chargeback article discussion

  • Most posts on this thread seem to relate to debit card purchases so it is obvious you would make your claim to your bank but who do I contact when it is a less than £100 credit card purchase? I have a Barclaycard but no longer have a bank account with Barclays.

Hi, I am in the position, like many, of having paid for flights with TC Airways directly and using my visa debit card to pay. I have read up and the visa chargeback scheme is my only hope of getting a refund. I followed the advice in the MSE article and rang my bank using the number on the back of my debit card and asked to dispute a transaction. They went through the usual security questions and then asked which transaction so I gave them the date and amount. Once they realised it was a TC transaction the lady said that I would have to check the website later today or tomorrow for updated info on what to do. I explained that the chargeback scheme is my only course of action available and why this is the case but she repeated the mantra and, when asked which website she was referring to, said to check Thomas Cooks website! I said that their website would not tell me anything other than to use the chargeback scheme and contact my bank/card provider which I was doing. They basically would not raise a dispute case. Is this correct? I am going to now use the template letter on MSE and send that off rather than being fobbed off. I do wonder if Lloyds are maybe one of TC banks and I would be effectively trying to get them to refund me from their own coffers, hence the fob off.

Hi there, do you have an update on this? I am in a similar position and finding it hard to get anywhere
  • I bought a physical and online detox package, online, from the US, and allowed access to their private facebook group.

I asked questions regarding ALA, a compound used in their brain detox phase.

According to Andy Cutler - who has scientific references to back up his claims -  The half life of ALA is 3 hours and shouldn't be taken randomly but instead in small frequent doses. But in the TCD Brain bottle - they use 200mg of ALA. Andy Cutler says to start ALA at 25mg - and gradually safely increase to 200mg over a period of 1-5 years or risk irreversible damage in the long term. And to avoid R-ALA.  I asked these TCD people their evidence that their R-ALA is safe to take.  My post was removed from the Facebook group.   I asked it again - I was removed from the Facebook group.

I emailed them asking for a full refund with the reasons why - I was told by my credit card company that I need to contact them first.

I checked this morning to see if they replied.

Instead they changed their advertisement accordingly in such a way that I can’t use that as a grounds for a refund:

    .....................................................................................................................................................................................................

    Hi Ana,

Please provide me a full refund as the full agreement has not been honoured from your end.

I also paid $897 instead of the $847 - you did not take $50 off.  It shows $897 taken out from my american express account.

The full agreement included Facebook access and:,

Webinars with True Cellular Detox Founder

    • You will get a Special Webinar with a TCD Founder, They will provide an additional two (2) live web classes and Q&A for Challenge participants.

BUT the live webinars are all by Ashley Smith - she is not the TCD Founder!

    ..................................................................................................................................................................................................

but since emailing the above, now their advertisement reads:

Monthly Calls with your certified True Cellular Detox™ Coach (4 - 15 Minute Personalize Calls + Email Support)

Since delivery I have not tried any of their TCD products due to concerns over their safety - and now even more from their bizarre behaviour and inability to communicate transparently to me -

Instead resorting to extreme measures - removing me from their Facebook group AND changing their advertisement in an attempt to remove the grounds at which I can make my claim for a refund.

    Their integrity is scary.

I am not sure what to do.

I bought the products because I was under a strong impression it will help me greatly in recover so I can get back into work -  especially when they mentioned health experts that are quite big in the alternative health scene - I am typing this now and looking at their advertisement and notice that they have even removed these big names from their original advertisement!

I can't afford to be cheated or health made even worse by taking these products.

    I'm typing this withholding tears.

They have emailed me back now regarding refund:

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

I wanted to reach out regarding your refund request for the January 2020 TCD Challenge program.

May I ask why you are asking for a refund on your program?  Also, you had attached a screenshot of some verbiage that you would be offered 2 live webinars with the founders of the program?  May I ask where you referenced that from?

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I have emailed them back with this message:

    ....................................................................................................................................................

    Hello Kim,

I am wanting a full refund because of these following points:

According to Andy Cutler - who has scientific references to back up his claims - The half life of ALA is 3 hours and shouldn't be taken randomly but instead in small frequent doses.

But in the TCD Brain bottle - it reads 200mg of ALA.

Andy Cutler says to start ALA at 25mg - and gradually safely increase to 200mg over a period of 1-5 years or risk irreversible damage in the long term. And to avoid R-ALA.

What evidence do you have that says your products are safe?

Why was I removed from the Facebook group after asking these questions?

Could you answer them now via email regarding ALA?

I notice you/your team changed your original advertisement after I emailed requesting a refund yesterday to: Monthly Calls with your certified True Cellular Detox™ Coach (4 - 15 Minute Personalize Calls + Email Support)

    ?

    Why did you do that?

     ..............................................................................................................................................................................................

Please anyone and everyone offer practical step by step solutions on what I can do?

    Thank you

  • Hello. Does anyone know what the implications of paying for a holiday by bank transfer are viz Chargeback or S75? Increasingly, deposits are taken via credit card but balance payments are not. And can purchases insist on companies taking money via Visa/MasterCard etc because of the greater protection they provide? Many thanks.

Used Chargeback yesterday with Smile (Co-op Bank) Visa to get a refund on my cancelled holiday. Lodged my request at about 1045 and when I checked about 2130 last night the money had been refunded. I got it transferred to my current account this morning less than 24 hrs all told. Brilliant service from Co-op bank.

  • Booked a trip to Cyprus in March 2019 to go in April 2020 with RSD travel. Paid a deposit when I booked. They asked for the final payment in early Feb 20. At the time things were developing so I was slightly apprehensive about going. But would have had to have paid in full anyway according to the Ts and Cs. So I paid. I had used Barclaycard. Different one for the deposit and final payments though.

As Cyprus closed down I asked if the trip was still going as there was a 14 day quarantine now in force. Eventually. When we got Nearer to the date it was confirmed it would not run. Asked for refund. Was offered voucher.

Called Barclaycard. 2 hours wait but an 0800 number so that was fine. And I had nothing else to do. The man said look on line for the form to claim. I searched for a long time and eventually found it. Posted it to the Freepost address with all the accompanying downloaded forms and emails from RSD travel as proof of payments and failure to travel.

i had travel insure and it was ATOL protected but i decided to go down the credit card route first. Thank you Martin Lewis.

Within a short time the full payment money was returned to my account From Barclaycard. I thought that was it. Then RSD returned my deposit about the end of May. So I got all my money back.

Well done RSD travel and Barclaycard. Very happy customer.

"Chargeback can be clawed back from your account as long as it's within 45 days (sometimes it's a shorter deadline) – so be careful before spending it. If the firm successfully disputes your claim (for example, if the firm submits compelling evidence in its favour), the money can be taken back out of your account or off your card."

In my chargeback with Halifax I was told of a dispute 65 days after money was put back into my account. This would suggest it took at least 20 days for Halifax to inform me of dispute. Perhaps main article should warn claw backs can happen after 45 days if bank is slow contacting their customers.

If you pay a £250 deposit for a £1000 holiday on a credit card then the entire £1000 balance could be covered under S75 even if you use multiple payment methods.  If you pay £250 by debit card and £750 by cheque or bank transfer then chargeback will only cover you for up to £250.

I've just encountered the same problem. Bank has admitted a 'processing delay' over 3 weeks after the 45 day limit expired. Have you had any luck submitting a compliant to the bank and getting a reply for the inconvenience caused?
  • On 20th May 2020 British Airways (BA) cancelled our return flights to Cyprus in July 2020. Since then I have been battling with an intransigent BA Customer Service team  refuse to refund me for the cost of the tickets and seat reservations despite several letters. Having reached deadlock in June I requested my Credit Card Company to raise a chargeback for the amounts in question. So far they have not done so and have not provided me with any justifiable reason. What can I do please?
