I think its a great thing to do cats xx

Alot of the time there are places for homeless people to go but that also depends on the amount of beds they have too so you need to get there early to claim your bed.

As for someone saying they have seen homeless people swapping "prime" pitches believe it or not there is an understanding between some homeless people so that everyone gets something, also what might be a so called prime pitch on a morning might not be so good come the afternoon so one homeless person knowing this will move on and someone else take it over

As for drink and drugs yes this is a common problem but by the same token there are some just trying to survive any way they can

And most of all dont forget there are some homeless people who are so used to that way of life they return to it even if fate is kind and they get off the streets, they simply dont know anything else.

    Great post Fizzpop.

That's a lovely thing to do Cats :A

Not everyone who is homeless has drink or drug problems...i don't and i know quite a few people who use the same project as me that don't either. And the vast majority of the people i know who do aren't the nasty, horrible scumbags that they're made out to be either, just damaged by life and couldn't find another way of dealing with life or their own heads. Of course some are, but they'd probably be the same without the substance abuse.

Please don't tar us all with the same brush. :)

I am going to be very honest here! I have often thought of wanting to help in some way or other. But tbh I am scared. Scared some maybe voilent, scared of the drink reactions, them not wanting help, prehaps hitting me or verbally abusing me or just the plain unknown. So anyone who gets out there to help these people are better than I am!!

RebekahR, I was a bit scared of his reaction too, hopefully he will be ok, either way he usually sits near a busy train station so I will just give it to him, wish him a merry xmas and go into the station. :) He seems like an ok guy, I dont think we would be violent or anything
  • I'm sure that he, along with the 1000's of homeless people have thought about just putting up a tent where they sleep in the street. They aren't waiting for the likes of you to come along and give them one.

Despite what you might see when looking at these 'occupy london' protests, people aren't allowed to just sleep on the streets of London. They get moved on regularly and don't need a tent slowing them down or making them more obvious to police.

Why don't you give them a camping stove and a hammock while you're at it :rotfl:

  • There's no need to be so sarcastic...she's only looking for ways to help!

People have already pointed out the pitfalls of tents; your rude response wasn't necessary.

Not only would a tent probably be stolen, he is more likely to be hassled and moved on by property owners/the council if he tries to pitch a tent. Decent sleeping bags cost quite a bit and most, despite being water resistant are not waterproof, so you would need to buy a bivi bag with it to make it useful. The orange things are not bivi bags, they are survival bags, and spending a night in one would be more miserable then spending a night without them - they are dreadfully sweaty and you get lots of condensation which reduces the usefulness of the sleeping bag.

I would just give him some food or money.

  • I used to have a "friendship" with a chap who was begging on the streets in Soho where I worked. There are hostel places but they often aren't safe. This chap had had drinking problems in the past which was what took him onto the streets and away from his children but often the drinking is a result of the homelessness and not necessarily the other way round. Anyway, this man did have a hostel place of some description but it was expensive and there weren't any effective locks on the doors so what few things he had would often be stolen. Perhaps some people just can't deal with that and feel safer outdoors on their own.

Anyway, Christmas used to come around quite often for him because we used to have frequent donations and whip-rounds for him in the office. The most urgent need was for proper shoes and warm waterproof clothing and my colleagues were incredibly generous. Our office was a bit like a jumble-sale sometimes.

I used to think often that it would just take one horrible misfortune like joblessness compounded by another like losing your home or a relationship split with no friends with a sofa and any one of us could have found ourselves in his situation, so by the grace of God etcetera
  • you're such a fab person, and as people have said, have shown what the meaning of christmas is.

We're in a village now so theres not any homeless here, but we try and do as much as we can for the local homeless and foodbank charities near us, because in this day and age you dont know whos going to need help next :(

Theres nothing wrong with being worried but you can also turn it on its head and they could be just as worried about you approaching them they dont know if your going to attack them for a giggle in front of your mates x

There has to be some trust there x

If you had met me on the streets as a homeless pregnant woman would you have come over and just said hello? x
It is better to stay silent and be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. :p

jojo_2012, if you read properly you would see that I asked for people's opinions on this and I didnt actually buy him one. If by "The likes of me" you mean someone who can actually think about another human being and want to do something???? I pray that you never fall on hard times so that you dont have "someone like me" wanting to help in a tiny way.

People might not be allowed to sleep on the street, but as you can see it happens you moron, just because you are not allowed to do something doesnt mean you dont do it!!!! especially when you have no choice.

Anyway please go be sarcastic and unhelpful somewhere else, and Merry Christmas to you!!!
