Canucklehead - thank you. It's a Glow Worm 18hxi. The problem was that after being on for a while the boiler would cut out and flash error code F4. On restarting it would go for 20 mins or so and then shut down and flash error code F1. The length of time it would run for decreased until eventually it wouldn't switch on at all.

The engineer cleaned everything up and dried it out and everything seemed ok (and a relatively cheap job). But it's now leaking so I guess more money needs to be spent.
  • Kathy, Try the following:
1 swich off boiler - RH switch front panel - turn from 1 to 0
2 Get a bowl and unscrew the plastic cap , underside rh side towards the back of boiler.
3 Water should pour out from the condensate trap. Check if any debris.
    4. Screw the plastic cap back.
    5. Switch back 0 to 1
    6 The boiler should start.

If not then ignition problem / gas valve / air duct problem ?? and you now need a Gloworm specialist
  • Hi.

Has the boiler ,to your knowledge, ever had the burner door seal replaced ?

You need someone who is familiar with this boiler to investigate properly, as there are other things to check out on this model.

It does sound like the first guy was not very good. Only you can decide how much energy you want to expend on chasing a claim.

    GSR.
Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • To be honest, it will be very difficult to prove that the first gas engineer was negligent. As above, you need to get someone out to look at it who isn't afraid to call Glow worm technical support whilst standing in front of your boiler and go through the fault diagnosis with them. We often have to resort to this, you can't be an expert on every single boiler.

Thanks all, having had the gas engineer out again today, they've sorted the leak and checked all valves and seals at my request (after reading your advice on this forum). They didn't charge me as it was a mistake on their part not to clean all the pipes.

I'm more relaxed about the negligence thing now that I (probably - don't want to tempt fate) don't have a huge bull to pay but I do still worry about the safety aspect for other customers.

Thanks again, I really appreciate all your advice.

    We've a potterton netaheat
Positive pressure case. I've never trusted anyone near it.
Only thing that's gone wrong in over 15 years has been the circuit board, that cost me £25 for a new one.

I'm the same as yourself, 5 1/2 years old Ferroli combi boiler, never serviced and not 1 problem, good luck or judgement, who knows but I'm tempted to get it serviced soon as I've had a good run.

I can beat that - my Ferroli 77ff combi is knocking on the door of 20 years old - only thing I've ever done is clean the fan - twice in 20 years ain't bad! Cost to date - diddly :j

I have no idea, but I have yet to see a tradesman that does not take a sharp intake of breath when he see's other peoples work.

    Who on earth posted this?

    To the original poster:
Not only is the grammar all wrong, but the syntax is shot to bits and there are 3 spelling errors. This is going to need parts *sharp intake of breath* course thats what you get with pricework- cowboy jobs. *sharp intake of breath* Course, I used to do pricework. Priced myself out of the game... £50 pound an hour to fix that post. And thats me being generous. *sharp intake of breath* Not sure how long itll take either. Ill just get me keyboard out of the van.

    Kettle on, love?
