i signed for the old headstone to have a new inscription on it as i owned the grave this was to be paid from mums estate as soon as i found out what my brother was upto i asked the stonemason to stop any work and i revoked my permision for him to do the engraving etc to which came the reply

    I don't understand this bit.

The stonemason said you are not the customer but said you had signed permission for them to do the work....

What exactly has your brother 'been up to'?

Are you unhappy with the work the stomemason has done?

Did he not do the work as you requested?

I don't understand why your brother playing dirty tricks meant that you wanted the stonemason to stop the work you gave permission for.

The question doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. You asked the local stone mason to add an inscription on a headstone and you signed permission for him to do it. You then had some sort of unspecified bust-up with your brother which led to you changing your mind over the inscription for some other unspecified reason and you're not happy that the stone mason told you that you'd signed the permission and the work had gone ahead?

So....what's wrong with the inscription? Is the wording what was agreed upon? Has it been done to good quality? If not, then complain to the company in writing. If it is what you ordered then it's what you've got and your disagreements with your brother are not the stone mason's problem.

  • i'm going to have a wild guess at translating what they mean.

The OP owns the grave but their brother has bought the gravestone therefore they're the stone masons customer. The OP then gave the stone mason permission to add an inscription whilst the gravestone is in place (ie to go on to the OP's property and work). The OP is unhappy with the wording her brother wants but the stone mason has had permission to go onto their property and make changes to their brothers property.

Question from me, if the grave was paid out of the estate, how can the grave belong to 1 person.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • unless they own the plot of land and the estate paid for the funeral expenses?
  • I am not sure about adding verse to headstone once one is down.

When our daughter died we bought the plot as only way of putting headstone down, on the headstone going down we had to give the title deeds to stone masons so he could get council to allow to put it on.
Now our daughters plot has only my name on, just the way it happened. But council will only deal with me regarding her plot.
Like i say i don't know if stone masons would need deeds to add verse as the stone be coming off and back on.

Graves are classed as an asset same as any other property and passed down through a will, so the mother may have left it to OP when she died so she now owns it. Or OP may have bought a large grave and given her mother the right to be buried there with her, the funeral being paid out of her mother's estate but OP still owning the grave.

Lots of speculation - I think the OP needs to clarify exactly what's happened.

Ok the grave is in my name it was put in my name when my dad died..
in august my mum died my brother was doing alot of stuff behind my back. before mums affairs was put into order the headstone engraving to add her name was took out of her estate. my brother sent me the forms to sign for the inscription on the grave which i own which i will be responsable for if the headstone falls etc.i signed them i then found out my brother had changed the inscription so when i rang the stonemason i told them i revoked my permision for them to do work on my headstone on my grave untill i could clarify the inscription with them to which their reply was.
i wasnt their customer my brother was and they couldnt reveal the new inscription to me.i told them i owned the grave and untill i could clarify i didnt give them permision to do the work on my grave.but they went ahead and did it anyway and now i am legally responsable or that headstone on my grave i anything happens to it
i have the deedsto that grave in my house they are soley in my name i gave permision for my mum to be buried there.

Has he changed it to something really bad that you can't live with?
