no disrespect but scoobys and X5's are technicly AWD and not classed as a 4WD , i rest my case

    Whats your 'case'??

We didnt buy it because it was 4wd, my wife bought it for performance, the 4wd aspect was an aside.

I note you didnt mention the X5 there, before you rested your 'case'?

I stand by my 'defence' ;) that buying a 4x4 in the depths of winter for 99.99% people is a knee jerk reaction that will cost them thousands in unnecessary spend.

Also in my 'defence' i managed to get around quite happily last winter in the vectra and then subsequently in a rwd mercedes, without the need for 4WD or AWD.

It's not the car but the tyres that matter in snow/ice.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Apologies - i think it was summer tyres v winter tyres.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Its funny on these threads how EVERYONE thinks they are Colin McRae (RIP) and due to their divine skill can defy the laws of physics to get up Snowdon in a BMW M3 and its EVERYONE ELSE that was so useless and getting in their way.

I wonder who these 'everyone else' were?

The other argument is why should someone not buy a 4wd if they want? why the pathological haters? My CRV is a roomy family car, easy to get in out of without bumping your head and if like me you have a bad back, huge boot, drives better than many cars and does 45mpg+ all year. No downsides but when it snows it also happens to romp along in the worst you'll get without doing anything more than pointing it where you want it to go. Also due to ground clearance, when the roads are blocked by the stuck and floundering (happens a lot here as people are trapped by the steep exit ramps on all our dual carriageways) I just go round them, over lumpy verges, u-turn over central reservations. Infact its lovely going shopping while its so quiet in town.

I have had a great many vehicles, I drive to places for a living to provide vital services, and I will never go back to a 2 wheel drive ever again.

Thanks , anything would be better than my husbands bmw. I want to change from my beetle as have just had a baby and really want a 5 door.

That'll be the rear wheel drive.

Driving in snow is about traction - a 4 wheel drive with narrow snow tyres is the best way, but if you live outside the Scottish Highlands, a small front wheel drive car with 13" wheels would do better than a lot of cars in the snow.

With reference to my original response, so that its back in the context you've taken it out of, i was responding to the following comment

"I am not saying winter tyres are not worth while but there are a lot of cheaper ones around that have been found to offer little advantage over decent summer tyres.. you have to spend generously to gain real advantage."
    :T:T:T

Totally agree, given an open road with a run up and slow down area, most competant and experienced motorists, and I include you and me here), can make good headway.

But that's in the ideal world I'm afraid. You/I will find the issue of wether to simply drive briskly past a skidding/sliding car knowing at any moment it may broadside:eek:, the insurance issues, :A

What do they say? drive as if every other motorist is an idiot?, yep, because they probably are, ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

The problem here (I'm on my 3rd winter with RWD) is RWD first. And I'll assume that the problem is with getting moving. A RWD car will have the same stopping ability as a FWD car, and a 4wd car, all other things being equal.Tyres are a big factor, but on the same road that I couldn't get moving on, FWD cars were flying along on summer tyres.
Solution? Rather than buy a Quashqai, I'd try a set of winter tyres on the beemer. I got a 16" set of genuine BMW wheels with good Pirelli tyres for £100 off Gumtree - take those to a tyre fitter and spend, what £200-£300, on a set of Winter tyres instead of shelling out for a new car? Even cheaper option is to fill the boot with heavy stuff, and get some weight over those driven wheels, that's what eventually got me moving last year.
