Nissan qashqais in the snow/ice?

Not true, a recent What Car? study showed that even the cheapest winter tyres were significantly better than even the best branded all year round tyres.
Do they/you mean summer tyres (which >99% of cars have) or all season tyres (which <1% of cars have) - they're different beasts?"One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
I've been seriously toying with the idea of buying something along the lines of an old pajero for about £600 in the summertime, ideally with a winch that I can take out for a bit of fun when it snows here - we have lots of untreated back roads that would be hilarious even at very low speed.
Could probably sell it for the same again once I was done with it too
That's the only "sensible" winter vehicle imo, a dirt cheap one - otherwise jsut stick the right tyres on your car.
In saying that, if the OP just wants one anyway and happens to be interested in if it has any advantage in the winter then yes, it'll be better at moving off than a 2wd summer tyre'd car but won't stop any better etc as has been mentioned above0 -
I wonder how many of the people commenting on this thread have ever driven a real 4x4 in the snow? seeing as most people can't differentiate between AWD and 4WD i doubt there are very many , but opinions are like buttocks-we all seem to have a few !!0

I respect anyone who simply says "I want new car, just because I want it". But those who !!!!!foot around trying to justify it to everyone else, they seem to spend their entire life trying to be something they're not and trying to please people who really don't care.
It's an awful lot of money to throw at something that'll be the talk of the works carpark or the school run muffia for all of 3 minutes and then called a "shed" 6 months later.
Oh and the best time of year to buy a 4x4 is the middle of summer, not only will they be cheaper, but you'll also avoid looking like one of many idiots who paid £££££'s for a 4x4 when all he/she really needed was the correct tyre's.
Totally agree.0 -

With reference to my original response, so that its back in the context you've taken it out of, i was responding to the following comment
"I am not saying winter tyres are not worth while but there are a lot of cheaper ones around that have been found to offer little advantage over decent summer tyres.. you have to spend generously to gain real advantage."0 -

Yes, i have - we have a 4wd subaru at the moment, and previously an X5. I actually dont like the way the Subaru drives in the snow - its rear wheel bias become amplified which if you're in the mood can be fun (particularly with 265BHP to play with) can become a bit tedious.
We live out in the countryside off a 'b' road and last year in the worst of the snow i'd an '03 vectra turbodiesel. The tyres were cheapo summer tyres yet the car still got me home.
The biggest hindrance to me getting home was all the other traffic that was clogging up the roads.
I would say if there was a study done, on those small handful of days last year with heavy snowfall, probably 99.99% of people were delayed because of the impact of the snow on traffic, NOT because of the inability of the vehicle they were in.0 -

no disrespect but scoobys and X5's are technicly AWD and not classed as a 4WD , i rest my case0 -

Totally agree I'd get a banger 4x4 and use it for driving in the sticks. For town or motorways a normal car with winter tyres will be more than enough.
In my experience main roads really only become a problem when there has been an accident and then having a 4x4 probably won't help much, but winter tyres might help prevent you being in the accident.
On side roads a 4x4 won't help with what it most likely to be the problem - compacted snow / ice."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -

The poster mentioned summer tyres, your reply to them mentioned a What Car survery and "all year round tyres" do you/What Car actually mean summer tyres?
Winter tyres - tyres specifically designed for winter use (with 3-peaks / snowflake symbol)
All-season tyres - compromise tyres suitable for both summer and winter use (have 3-peaks / snowflake symbol)
Summer tyres - tyres designed for summer use (do not have 3-peaks / snowflake symbol)"One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -

Apologies - i think it was summer tyres v winter tyres.0
