aerial suitable for digital conversion?

Until a year ago I thought that I would need to replace my aerial because the quality of reception on my ground floor was poor. It didn't matter then as I had cable. In Dec 2010 i bought a small flat screen for my bedroom with Freeview. When i connected it to the aerial, the picture was fine. However downstairs the picture with aerial was still poor.

Could this be because upstairs I am closer to the aerial or could it be because the television downstairs is much older (about 13 years old)?

I have ordered a new tv with freeview for the living room and don't know whether I will need to replace the aerial or not.

Hi, if you are saying that this is the same aerial fed to both tv's then it would suggest that there is a problem with the cabling after the split to the downstairs tv.

Could it be that the downstairs tv is tuned to the wrong transmitter?

Could it be that the downstairs tv has a faulty tuner?

Have you ever tried a set top box downstairs to see what the results are?

The possibilities are endless ,you can only find out by logically ruling things out one by one.

I thought of trying to test it in this way by connecting the new tv to the aerial downstairs but the old tv is too heavy to easily move single handed. Think I will just wait until my new tv is set up next weekend and see if i get a good picture on Freeview.

Most likely because downstairs you have an analogue TV and upstairs you have a Freeview TV.

I am hoping that this is the reason. The new tv will hopefully be ok.

If it doesn't work reliably, take Keith's advice and check how the feed is split. Make sure the cable is OK (ideally it should be double-screened copper such as WF100) and that there are no badly made connections or joints. If there's a wall socket, that should also be a screened type.
