Funny... I used to get cream cheese and marmite sandwiches in my school packed lunch - I just assumed I had weird parents ;)

No not weird parents, I love cream cheese & marmite especially on flat bread.

I have just come across this thread, I want to go and make lots of bread now.

I just want to bump this thread and say a massive thank you to Thriftlady for starting this thread. It is wonderful!!!!! Dh has been having crackers at work as I couldn't think of anything else to give him as he no longer wants sandwiches. I have started to make my own granary/ wholemeal bread and i can't wait to get started on some of these ideas. Fancy doing some with caramelised onions and garlic, oooooh yummy maybe have to do some tear 'n' share with sun dried toms and parmesan!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I think the one you might mean was the Marriage's site, but I can't seem to find the link to their shop any more  perhaps someone else can help with that? :)

I could of course be totally wrong :o

I made a tear & share with sunblush & parmesan, I dipped the balls of dough in the oil from the sunblush tub, the result was glorious :D

my first attempt many years ago was crusty rolls to go with home made soup, they turned out like nasty grey miniature cannonballs :rotfl:

I've recently started making bread, the recipe I have been using is one from Lorraine Pascal's website for plaited bread. I have made a plaited loaf and put the same dough in a loaf tin. I have noticed on here that you all talk about putting butter & sugar in your bread her recipe is just flour, fast acting yeast, salt & water. I'm happy with the recipe but I wondering if it is nicer with butter & sugar added - mind you most things are I suppose! Anyone tell what the advantages are of adding them and give me a recipe using these and fast acting yeast. BTW i don't have a BM I am using the dough hooks on my mixer.

i've been butter sugar and butter in mine, but a few days ago i put flora in mine (light one incase that matters) and it acually tastes nicer than the ones i've been doing with real butter, my hubby even commented on it

  • Has anyone successfully made dough balls nice and round and fluffy? I made some as a starter for a dinner party and, although they were nice, they were a bit craggy. Any suggestions?

is it that thay weren't smooth & evenly round?

if that's the problem, make sure you have a nice soft pliable dough, then the trick's in the shaping
you have to take the ball of dough & push the bottom edge under with your fingertips, at the same time turning the dough a bit, until you've gone all round it & it's a nice even shape

it sounds more complicated than it actualy is, possibly easier to have a go with a larger loaf-sized piece of to to start with?

craggy can be good too though ;) at the beginning of this thread thriftlady describes a loaf* that you repeatedly chop into & roughly pile up, it looks & tastes great, every time I've made it it's been a huge success :)

    * EDIT ... it's in the first post, Free Form bread
