That sentence appears to me to mean that the range was (some undisclosed figure) greater than 1,500m.0

The optimum range for the gun is given as 1500-2500 using AP ammunition. The optimum range for HE goes up to 3500. These are the recommended ranges for use with these two types of ammunition which form 95%+ of the supplies the tank carries. The maximum kill with one of these guns is recorded at 5000m which was achieved at night using TI (the longest range ever recorded on a tank-to-tank kill). From this we can deduce that the commander and gunner were able to identify and destroy an enemy tank at 5000+m. Given this, and the optimum ranges, you will see why I consider 1500+m to be rather a short distance for the weapons system and for identification of vehicles by day or by night (or in poor visibility) to be easily achievable.
As always, what I, and everyone else in the discussion has to bear in mind is: we weren't there and we don't know what really happened and we're only discussing hearsay in the first place.0 -
Just saying that it wasn't 1500 metres, it was more than that.Very odd at those ranges. 1500m on a 10x sight is like 100m in real life'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

I understand that. What I'm trying to do is educate you on what ranges are within the easy capability of the weapon. I'm sure you'll agree that if 1500+ is the indicator then it's likely to be between 1500-2000 but with the knowledge that you can easily identify targets up to 3500 you'll see why I made the comment that I couldn't understand that gunner's difficulty at such a short range.0 -
5000m ? what about bullet drop or is it travelling at mach 5 or something
I think these tanks have automatic trajectory systems to calculate the arc required. Artillery tanks can fire like 20m :eek:0 -

In a word - yes. An APFSDS round flies at 1763 meters per second.
Automatic trajectory is taken care of within the sight graticule pattern up to the tolerances I mentioned earlier but that's more to do with HE than AP. HE flies much slower (in an arc) at 670mps and needs more tolerance. AP has a flat trajectory until the kinetic energy is spent. Only then will it begin to fall. The Vickers L32A1 tank gun has a maximum range of around 15km but using it as an artillery piece is a waste of the weapons system. The gun has a hardened barrel to fire much faster rounds with a heavier charge.0 -
Ron Paul would get my vote if I had one:

Prompted by this thread and wanting to check the actual wording of what I said in post#4, I have just watched the full testimony on youtube...

Wow.
George Galloway's speech and the subsequent answers he gave to the senator's questions are not only enthralling but also expose the sham which was the Iraq war.
