We had a card tonight from the new local free paper delivery girl -she has been doing it 6 weeks. I thought it was a bit cheeky as it was obvious she wanted a tip. She left our paper outside when the outside doors were shut and it was the october holiday which she would know as she is at school so no tip from us I'm afraid.

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

When my son did his paper round he didn't used to post cards as he thought it was really hinting for a tip. He still got a lot of cards and tips though, and whenever he did he'd post a Christmas card through their door afterwards and write thank you in it.

A couple of our paperboys have posted cards though, and I haven't minded. I would've tipped them anyway as I know they get up early in the cold and dark mornings and think they deserve it.

One house always used to give him home bakes - all year round. He used to like delivering there. :D

So she made a mistake the first time she delivered to you (or was it the previous delivery person as 6 weeks doesn't get you back to October).

Not everyone likes to try opening house doors (even to a porch) and maybe if there's a letterbox there it wasn't obvious on her first visit.

A bit harsh but, hey, some people are like that and we learn to live with it.
  • definitely send the cards you can get 20 for £1 in the pound shop.

I don't get why some people think that they should be tipped when others can be working equally as hard and get no acknowledgement.

it's mostly kids getting up in the bad weather at 6am to deliver papers, a £ or ££ wont hurt

My paper round was for a family run business. Our boss used to tell us that at xmas, instead of being quiet when delivering the papers - slam the gates shut etc to remind them there is a person delivering their paper. My customers used to drop money into the shop for me and gifts; was brilliant!
    Agree 100%.

I never was so blatant as to post a card but, come Christmas, the out of tune whistling became a lot louder (usually a popular Christmas tune) and I would easily pocket £80-£100 over a 2 week period. And that was way over 30 years ago.

I would as well. I would send a card to them for Easter as well as including a thank you note every time.

It wouldn't hurt. Even if you can't afford to tip them, a card would be nice.

Pound shop, I went into the card factory and found 40 cards for 99p.
