  • Just send them cards!

trust me, it works, used to make a fortune 20 years ago doing this!

NB - Top Tip = if you see a bit of a white envelope peeping out of a letterbox it is probably a card for you from the house owners! don;t do what i did and push it back in only to realise later! :-)

Send the cards. As for the above, I know plenty of Muslim families who celebrate Xmas to some extent (tree, gifts for kids etc) and give cards; also there are plenty of practicing Christians/Catholics from Asian countries so assumptions based on names can be wrong; I doubt anyone would get offended by a Christmas card. I send one to my Jewish friend and cross out Christmas and write Chrismukkah (though I wouldn't try this on a stranger) and he gives Xmas gifts and cards too.
  • Oh definitely send them all a card! When we used to have a paper delivered, the paper boy used to send a card and I would hand him one back next time I saw him with a fiver in it. Not once did I look at it as begging on the paper boy's part, it was a well earned tip.

    Hope you make loads!!
There is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro.....
  • Totally agree. My son did this when he was doing his paper round, and it seem to guarantee tips.

No complaints, and IMO it's showing initiative.

15 years or so ago my son used to buy discounted Christmas cards in January and post them to all of his paper round customers the following December, he pocketed over £100 every Christmas for several years using those tactics.

Not unless they're made up councillors and police.
Although a 'seasons greetings' card rather than a 'Merry Christmas' card would be better. You may call it being offended by Christmas, but I prefer to see it as paying attention and respecting their beliefs.
You'd be more likely to get a tip from a Muslim family if you posted through a Happy Eid card etc
what if one house was a family of Atheists?
  • My daughter and her friend deliver the local weekly free paper to over 400 houses and always deliver a card on the second to last delivery before christmas.

It pays off for them and is a nice gesture.

    Good luck!

My paper round was for a family run business. Our boss used to tell us that at xmas, instead of being quiet when delivering the papers - slam the gates shut etc to remind them there is a person delivering their paper. My customers used to drop money into the shop for me and gifts; was brilliant!

I had a card on my mat a few days ago 'from your paper boy' along with my evening paper. To me it is so obvious that he does it to get tips and he certainly won't be getting anything from me. I see him every week when I pay him if I wanted to. However despite being told on numerous occasions he leaves the paper sticking out so it gets wet and when he comes for the money never rings the bell but thumps on the door.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Write a little note on an A4 sheet of paper, fold it down to about the size of a £10 note then put it in an envelope.

Imagine the paper lad's suprise when he expects a wad of fivers, and insteads read a note along the lines of "It's not only a security problem to leave newspapers hanging out the letterbox, but it gets them wet too!" :D
