paper round and christmas tips

I do a paper round and make sure that I deliver the paper before 8am. The manager of the store told me to send out cards to everyone on my delivery sheet. There are two things that I can do:

1. Send out cards and see who tips me. (To me, this sounds like begging for money)

2. Wait and see who tips me then send them a card. (Logical and I don't waste money on buying around 30 cards)

Which one do you think I should do?

  • How many are on your round?

If he wants them to have a card, why isn't he buying and writing them?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Send cards and then wait and see who tips you. It's not begging it's sending cards to your 'customers' and hoping that they tip you.

I would DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITLEY be sending the cards! It won't have crossed a lot of your customers minds to tip you, until they receive one. many of them might not even know your name.

You can pick up cheap multi packs in Primark or the Card Factory.

Of course, it's up to yourself, but I know what I would be doing, and I think your boss is trying to help you by offering you his advice too.

because he's not getting the tips.

around 30 papers, many are guardians.

he says that it more personal if it's from the person who delivers the papers

Consider it an experiment in business investment - spend a couple of quid on some relatively cheap cards, deliver them as you go (so minimal effort) and see what return you get - if you get more in total than the cost of the cards then it was worth doing (so repeat next year), if you don't then don't bother next year! The other minor consideration is that you might just put off someone who was thinking of cutting the cost of delivery and thereby make your job more viable.

I don't think it's a case of the boss "wanting" the customers to get a card, more like he's trying to help out the paperboy by suggesting this will elad to more tips.

I can't see how his customers getting or not getting a christmas card from the paperboy will make a noticable impact on his business, one way or another?

I personally would definitely tip a paperboy, especially if he sent me a card (a tactful reminder lol). I don't get a paper delivered now, but when I lived at home, my parents did. We always got a card, and always tipped £5 (and that was 10 - 15 years ago!).

    As an estimate, let's say 50% of your customers will give you a tip. (50% £5 and 50% £10) - that's £112.50

Good luck, hope you coin it in! :T Let us know how you get on!
  • and don't forget to use a bit of common sense and read your market!

If you have 30 deliveries, don't go sending cards to Mr & Mrs Patel, Rabbi Schultz and the crazy family who try and sell you a copy of Watchtower

I dont' know them at all, not even their name. I just deliver the papers and stay as quiet as possible.
