Thanks Nibs - I did do a search but that one didn't come up. Also it seemed an odd place for it to be posted.0

I will tip the paper boy £5 when he collects his money on Friday (handy, so I don't have to look out for him) I think that's a reasonable amount, if lots of people give him tht he will have a decent haul.
I would have tipped the postie but the routes changed last month and the new one isn't that great - keeps olding my letters and pushing them through the door and he's a bit grumpy sounding when I have spoken to him. The old one was polite and would leave parcels somewhere safe etc.
My BIL is a delivery driver and last year one old lady gave him a £1 coin as a tip, he was really touched by it and has never forgotten her, always makes an extra effort if he delivers to her house now.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. What do people give their cleaner? I have a fairly new one who comes fortnightly and I am not sure what to give her.0

I haven't tipped in the past, except for my window cleaner who is lovely and does a really good job - I tend to give him double the clean before Christmas.
As for binmen......ours spent months on strike this year, our green bags haven't been collected since May (garden waste) and at one point our normal wheelie bin hadn't been collected for over 6 weeks!!!! Since we've had to keep paying our council tax anyway, and the council have said they won't be offering anyone in the city a rebate on it as compensation.....the binmen won't be getting a penny.
I remember my mum tipping the milkman.....but we don't have one. I'm 37 by the way.0 -
When I lived at home we used to tip everyone...postie, window cleaner, paper boy, bin men and the woman that cleaned the communal stair on a paying rota. Mind you we knew them all by name amd could write it in a card...I remember the envelopes all lined up on the hall table. This was long enough ago though that I also recall my mum putting single pound notes in the cards, lol. A pound was a good tip in these days!
Now I just tip the postie because he is good, he's been on this round for a couple of years and though he's a dour old guy he's very efficient and goes out his way to make sure you get your post. I can't tape envelopes to my front door here, they'd be gone in ten seconds, but I leave a post-it note saying "Postie please ring" on the 23rd or whatever. He's not daft, he knows what it's for. I just give him £5 in a small card saying "Thanks for the great service" but I know most of my neighbours do the same as well and there's 32 houses in our one short cul-de-sac alone, so count it up. £5 is sod all for a good year's work after all.
I hardly ever see the bin men tbh, so they don't get anything. But I did take the lads at the dump a box of biscuits last week when I was down because I'm there most weeks and they're a great bunch, very helpful. They seemed very pleased anyway.Val.0 -
My hubby's a milkman so I'd have to say tip them please:D He works hard - gets up at 2am in all weathers and does a good job so why not! Plus he takes special care of the tippers;)
I tip my hairdresser because they are low paid and she does a good job. We have different postmen all the time and I never see the bin men so dont tip them. I do some cleaning part time on top of my normal job and I get a Christmas box from my lady - either chocs or money.
We get no Christmas bonus at work although( I work for a charity) the boss gives us a tin of sweets between us all out of his own pocket.Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Gave my postie £5 in a Christmas card today. That reminds me - I tried to tip the window cleaner last year but he was horrified and refused. He is Polish - maybe it's not customary to tip in Poland? Anyway, I didn't want to embarrass him so just shrugged and said 'oh well then'!0

Hi
My OH is a postman and I can assure you that all tips are very much appreciated.
At this time of year he does get a lot of tips not always cash, often boxes of biscuits, sweets, even homemade jams.
A few people on his delivery round know that we have children and always give him a little selection pack of sweets for them,
Usually any cash tips are given as a card with the money inside.
I also tip my own postman I usually give him a bottle of whiskey as he really does go out of his way for me.
The binmen I usually leave a case of 12 beers out on top of the bin for them as they can split this up and they have always thanked me when they see me and seem to appeciate it.
To the people who say they wont tip because the binmen don't come in to the garden to collect the bin please remember that they have been told that they are not to do this anymore by their bosses and will be disiplined if caught doing so.
:mad:To the person complaining about the time that the mail is delivered this really has nothing to do with your postman, the route that he is given is set out by someone in an office who has never been out to deliver a piece of mail in their life.
The postman has a start time and a finish time and if your house is unfortunatly near the end of his delivery then your mail will arrive later, the postman has no control over this but will still have been up and out in all weathers in ice and snow and high winds, hail and sleet, rain and anything else that the weather can throw at him in a day, so please do not be so condesending as to say he must try harder.
My OH started at 6.00am this morning meaning he was up at 4.45am, he has just phone to say that he will be home around 7pm, he has had one 40 min meal break in that time.:(1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480
