To Tip or not to Tip?

Morning all, no doubt this should be posted in the Arms but OS is the board I most lurk on so would value your opinion.
I happened to be looking out the window this morning when the bin men went by and saw my neighbour hand them an envelope. I think it is safe to assume that this was a Christmas tip.
I have not lived at home for 4 years and have never tipped the bin man or postman in that time and am wondering how many people do? When I think about it makes more sense to tip someone for a job I'd rather not do and that they do in the most beastly of weather rather than a waitress for mediocre service after a mediocre meal out.
So would value your opinions - if you feel comfortable please rough amounts and add your age range - I am sure it would be interesting reading.
Seasons greetings,
K

63. I tip the postman £5 because he is always very helpful and friendly. He is a young man and the same postie that we have had since we moved here. No-one else gets a christmas tip.0
-
No, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. We don't have a regular postie (and they've recently lost a pracel of mine), the bin men I don't see as they come so early, and there's no other regular services we receive.0
-
I never have done, though I have been thinking about it a lot, is £5 acceptable or would that seem mean? Not enough for the binmen though as there's a lot of them... Could I give a box of biscuits or something instead?June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

We don't have a regular postie (though I wouldn't have tipped our old one who used to swear and kick the door whenever the buzzer wasn't working!) so, no. I'm not even sure about our binmen. I'm never here when the bins are collected. At DDs grandmas house though the postie gives her an M and S egg at easter and a small gift at Christmas; I'm guessing that DDs grandma tips him quite handsomely0

I used to tip the milk man but when he retired i stopped having it as it's cheaper at the supermarket0

I recycle everything i can so the amount of stuff that actually gets thrown away means i go for weeks and weeks before the bin needs putting out, so the binmen get nothing. Most of the time it's the same postie so i always give the him a couple of quid.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I used to tip my postie a fiver as he was very good. Had a change of posties recently and not going to bother - may take some sweets into the sorting office instead.
Would like to do binmen but no idea how many there are, perhaps chocs or biscuits again? Can't afford much, have 3 kids! Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

I always tip the paperboy £10 and the postie £5. I dont tip the binmen.
As a child I remember the binmen used to knock the door for their xmas tip, but this was when they used to come into the back garden, lift the steel (I think) bin onto their back and return it once emptied. They were always cheerful too!
The binmen today wont even step on my path to get the bin if I've forgotten to put it by the kerb. Fair enough but no tip for you0 -
I think I will tip my postman, he's so good. Always cheerful, if I'm out he'll put my parcel in my recycling box for me, he's very helpful and I do like him... just hope £5 is ok...
The binmen are good too, if I forget they often come and get the bin anyway and they wave at the kids and never crash into my car! Perhaps biscuits or mince pies for them though as money wouldn't go far...June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500
