  • I agree with the advice that people are giving about checking statement etc - At the end of the day this is a site that people use to pick up advice & knowledge so that they can get themselves out of a financial pickle

I have been caught out with this before which resulted in loads of bank charges etc - this was in the days when I never used to check my account I will not make that mistake again - neither will the OP I would imagine.

Hope you can sort something out in time for Christmas could you ask friends or family to help you out a bit.

God some of you are so up your own backsides it's a wonder anyone posts here anymore.

O.P. this is highly unusual and there are many of us "not so perfect" people who would have been caught out with this. You have my sympathies.

As for the rest of you, how do you have time to post on here, go check those accounts?

I so glad this was posted! so totally agree!

  • Hi all. What an entertaining thread and I can appreciate the many differing viewpoints. I think part of the issue is that text does not always indicate the emotion, the inflection in one's voice. thus what is intended to be simply speedy advice or comments can instead come across as arrogance and lecturing.

What is worth thinking about, I believe, is the quality of online banking for tracking finances. I have a spreadsheet and I also have Natwest online banking. Before my DMP I banked with Santander.

With Santander debit card payment would not show up for days, even weeks on end. With Natwest it INSTANTLY shows as not available, leaving me with a balance and an available balance. So in the OPs case, if it was a debit card payment, it would have shown in the balance for 3 months but would to have been available for me to spend.

Whilst I know we all have to take responsibility for our own budgets I suspect around 50% of people do not. On this forum, through it's very nature, I suspect a highere proportion of people do - likely they would not visit this site if not. Therefore I would not feel to bad about your mistake OP ad you are one among many in the real world.

What is important is that you now learn from this. Good luck!

    This is completely true!

Unfortunately you probably don't have any legal recourse here. You have the product and owe the money. Yes I think the system is wrong but there's not a lot you can do.

What you can do for the cost of a stamp is write a letter to Tesco customer services explaining what has happened and how their delay has caused you to struggle financially and incurred charges from your bank just before Christmas.

Because they are technically in the right I would make the letter really polite and explain that you are disappointed that a company with Tescos good reputation (:rotfl:) would do this. You may get nothing but if you're lucky you might get a polite letter in return and some vouchers that you could use towards your groceries to soften the blow a little bit.

Crikey 6months is a blooming long time no wonder you forgot... life does tend to get in the way of remembering what you paid for when so I do sympathise with you. Lordie I forgot what I spent yesterday let alone six months ago. I now have an excel spreadsheet on my laptop that I update weekly to try and keep track of all I spend but even then I sometimes make a mistake and forget something and have to juggle finances like mad when a payment goes out of my bank.

All you can really do now is learn by it and try to juggle payments around so you can manage over christmas. Remember it isnt all about presents so don't feel guilty if you can't spend money on gifts for others. Look on these forums for ideas and maybe get creative? xx

The op said they can take up to six months not that they had as she paid this on 30 october so in fact 1.5 months since she paid it.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

What would your advice be then? Not to do an SOA and rant at Tescos?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Please be supportive i didnt think this was blame game board but maybe i'm mistaken now. Hell we wouldn't all be here in the "debtfreewannabe" board if we hadn't made mistakes in the past with our own finances. I'm sure OP has now gone off to earn some cash or tweak their budget so their xmas and new year is hopefully a jolly one and one where they have learnt from their mistakes.

Some things are sent to try us, others just to make us stronger.

OP i hope you have a happy xmas! family and friends are the important things and totally free!

  • I don't think people are having a go. Just pointing out that Tesco have done nothing illegal and offered suggestions on how to avoid this happening in the future. I agree it's a horrible situation but this board isn't for "oh poor you, nasty corporations, sue them!!", it's for advice on how to deal with situations like this.

I have to say that I read some of the postings not as 'here's some advice for the future' but rather it seemed that some posters were saying 'how stupid are you, why the hell didn't you check? *I* always check'.
This is probably not what they meant, but it's how it could be read, and if you're already in a panicked, emotional state about a lack of funds just before Christmas, this isn't very helpful.

But neither is 'oh poor you, it's all someone else's fault, bad Tesco!' really. Pity only goes so far. Advice on how to budget could help the OP sort things out. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime... I think some people (like me) are coming from the perspective of having been there and knowing that not being aware of your balance and outgoings is a warning sign your finances are getting out of control. Simply joining in an anti Tesco rant would ignore the issue.
