Cheers weird nev well you are seem to be more mechanically minded than me!

Although by all accounts I could have done this repair, if I knew where to look (and could fit under my car). At 6'3" and 18 stone I can't get under anything other than a 4*4 without a ramp lol!

Had 75k in my head, I always do it a bit early.

However given I hardly do 5k miles a year its a good two years away.

Car looks pretty tidy I don't think its been driven hard and it has a good VW service history. So it seems its been looked after only 1 previous owner too.

with the nature of the waterpumps fitted in them being of plastic impeller with antifreeze and high heat temps they dont tend to last as long as you would expect a "normal" waterpump to, and as you dont use it much and i gather the 5k is for short trips, id be getting it done in the next couple months. you strain the car more when you do short trips than you would if you did regular long trips. oil water engine componants suffer under short trips.

Given you are no fan of the VW water pumps what would you receommend I should go for?

Timing belts are due every 5 years on these I think.

If it is your water pump, VW perhaps have an updated design for you to put on your car.

Some people would argue plastic impellars are better. Better plastic pieces than metal pieces going around your engine if they do brake - granted metal is less likely to disintegrate.

not just limited to VW, ford have them too and prone to failure on the MK2 moningo's v6 duratec engine.

call VW and give them your reg and ask if theres a upgrade to your water pump. ford improved the plastic quality in the mondeo MK3 duratec (because this gave them a get out clause of were making improvements all the time not because we think their a common problem etc etc. VW will do the same when they see a pattern of failures is just improve it rather than do a whole new design just to say they improve their quality of products all the time balony.

Looking at the log book timing belt was done at 44k about 2 years ago. Not due till 80k so I think I will just wait.
