Car Kaputt
Options
Hi there,
Bought a 2nd hand car approx 1 month ago. Well tonight something pretty dreadful happened. Not sure what yet but there was a loud matalic bang and hte car then behaved like it was on kangaroo petrol + wouldn't rev much above idling, got a feeling its going to be an expensive repair! Managed to limp home (it was onlya couple of hundred yards but the car is seriously broken).
Luckily I bought it from a garage and am supposed to have a 2 month guarantee!
Just want to check what my statutory rights are should the dealer decide to get cute?
Can I demand a refund?
Can I demand a full repair?
Thre is no way I could drice the car to the dealers so in such circumstance will he have to pay for the two truck?

open the bonnet mate, i have a feeling you are going to find a hole in the engine.. what car, age, mileage, price etc...0
-
Its a mark V golf GT TDI, 05 plate, 67k miles, cost £5,900.
Had a quick peak under the bonnet but its one of those new fangled engines everything is covered up with bright plastic + it was pitch black so hard to see anything anyway.
There doesn't seem to be any oil or anything like that but the band did sound a bit like a very loud pop coming to think about it no dount something has blown?
Thing is I was going down hill at the time I hardly touched the accelerator when it happened?0 -
so no oil, blod snot and tears underneath the engine then? that good news. you need to get it recovered back to the dealer first thing, and dont try and start the car.
in fact i wouldn't even mention that you drove it home.
ring them first thing in the morning and see what they say first, with any luck they will be a good un and just come and get the car off your drive for you.0 -
Yeah you definitely didn't drive it home. It went pish pop bang, you pulled over and got towed home.0

Had this exact same symptom years ago..
The gearbox had blown itself away internally. Neighbour took it out and got the shaking.. never seen anyone look so scared behind the wheel. There was an almighty bang and we jumped out looked underneath and found the gearbox leaking fluid all over the road and bits of metal teeth falling out with it. Like you, it happened bang on xmas.. we cancelled xmas to get it fixed and thought we'd splash in the january sales instead.. nope, something else went wrong
Go back to your garage and get them to deal with it. If its your gearbox you might want to look at the idea of a replacement engine too as severe strain on a running engine by a seized gearbox could of damaged other parts inside the engine.0 -
turbo pipe havent blown off has it? the jubilee type clips holding these pipes are put under alot of strain and over time lose thier grip.
i can remember being in a mates evo 5 going uphill then an almighty BANG caugh fart and splutter.
on a serious note of events, could be that its broken a con rod, turbo blown to bits, or a stupid design of the plastic impeller water pump braking up into bit and being thrown into the engines water ways.
wich GT TDI do you have 110 130 150?0 -
Its the 140bhp model.0

oh man it gets worse seems the guarantee was not written down!
What statutory rights do i have (if any?)0 -
Sale of Goods Act is your friend.0

one of the better new PD 16v heads in there fella as well as revised chassis and suspension and powersteering setup, but again VW lets you down with a cheap and nasty water pump.
you do know you cant just stick any oil in either has to be vw's PD oil spec oil or youll ruin the engine and turbo.
not much can go wrong with the mkv GT TDI 140 (138 BHP high torque version) except the fact theres no warning whe hitting the limiter so if you sit in wrong gear going down hill not paying attention to the gear selected or revs you will here a BANG and hitting redline in them isnt healthy for it with downhill force.
my hunch is on that water pump not failed to the point of snapping the timing belt wich is lucky but blitzing it shaft and impeller. did you notice the engine temp gettin higher when you drove it home from the dash read out.
also dont mention you drove it home, a "friend came and towed you home", subsequent damage as a result of driving it could land you out of pocket.
sales of goods act would be your friend if you have no documented proof you have a 2 month warranty or what ever you should have had.
if you bought from a decent dealer or trader there shouldnt be any problems. it will need collecting on a flat bed or tow to them wich they should arrange.0
