Help - 18 year old student son. He had an HTC HD2 but it died last year and he's been using an old nokia :-)

I want to get him an HTC for xmas but not sure which one. It seems 3 are one of the only networks that let you cap the amount. Unless anyone can tell me of any others? Would suit me to put on contract as get cash back thru quidco and capped monthly amount.

Student - will use everythin on it. He has classic ipod so music is not major although significant.

Anyone advice?

Reckoned Id be paying 2-30 per month. Need at least 300mins unlimited text and internet as much as poss.

Suppose main thing is getting right phone 1st.

Please help,

Contract phone or sim-free/PAYG? Why HTC only?

I've never heard about capped tariffs at '3' (do you mean PAYG?), but tesco mobile and t-mobile do them. Also, giffgaff 'goodybags' (PAYG) are good: 250+Unltd+Unltd for £10 or 400+U+U for £15.

However, why do you care about the tariff for a 18 y.o.? Are you going to pay for the airtime too?

guess i thought contract capped would be better del and stop his top ups running out. He had a HTC hd2 but it broke. Loves HTC so wanted to get that as surprise.

HTC Sensation XL 200+3000+500Mb 24x£21.50=£516. Deal probably expires today.
Quidco £60 (expires today, normally £50).

    However, it's uncapped tariff.

I cant fault the HTC Mozart, running windows 7 ....it does everything! :)
I get 'unlimited' texts, 300 mins and 250mb of internet via Orange all for £20
  • Don't go for a Wildfire please - it's rubbish. I hear that retailers are trying to ditch their stock the junk! You will not be able to run all the apps because of the limited screen resolution.

Which HTC? I had a HTC Desire but atrocious battery life has pushed me to sell it on ebay. I am not sure about the latest generation of HTC phones though. Come on moneysavingexperters, help this person!

Tesco capped contracts are generally SIM only, giving a student an uncapped contract and they know mum or dad will pick up the bill is asking for trouble.

With all due respect to the OP, the son needs to buy and fund a phone contract himself. Having a parent pay the phone cost and the line rental is not a good life lesson.

If the HD2 died why was it not fixed under warranty, they only came out Nov '09 and HTC offer a 2 year warranty. If the OP is willing to replace when it breaks it then what is it teaching him about looking after things?
