MSE News: O2 launches iPhone 4S leasing scheme: is it any good?

A better option is to buy the phone from Apple using their 10 month interest free credit, so £49.90 a month for 10 months, and add £10 a month for a GiffGaff or 3 Sim making £619 for the year.
Cheaper than the O2 scheme and you can then sell the phone after a year (or any time you like really).0 -

Apple won't care, they sell the handset to the network regardless.
O2 are the one doing the leasing. Although charging £55 a month for a Tarrif that is about £25 on sim only ( they do 600 or 900 minutes so splitting the difference) means you paying £360 for the handset hire.0 -
I seem to be just as confused as everyone else! What is the point in an insurance scheme that doesn't cover damage - what exactly does it cover?
And unless this isn't covered either, surely if your phone is broken you can just "lose" it and get another from the insurance company just before you have to send it back?0 -
The compulsory insurance is interesting. I would love to know how they get away with this.0

I think it's a common place for leasing.0

Disclaimer: Not RTFA yet.
The insurance is there to prevent people getting a free pass with lost/stolen iPhones, but it'll be interesting to see what happens with people who have their claims declined.
I think it'll be interesting to see how it turns out, personally I think it's a rip off, but people will buy into it as the latest iPhone is a status symbol, not just a phone. People are currently taking out iPhones on an 18 or 24 month contract on launch date then buying out what's left (trading in their phones) when the next one comes so they can get that one.
For what works out as an extra £54 over a year you can take a gamble and go without the insurance, get more minutes (1200) and keep the phone at the end of the day and I'm sure you'd be able to get more than your £54 with any recycling site after a year.
I believe they'll be extending they're leasing scheme to other phones if this one works, I can see that working for some people, but personally I see it as more of a deal for those who always want the latest gadgets more than those who can't afford the latest gadget.
In general the iPhone's a rip off and contracts aren't the best way of buying phones, you're always paying for the name when it comes to Apple, even if you go for a model that's over a year old you'd be cheaper buying the latest model outright than what you'd be paying on the first year of a 24 month contract.
When it comes to other handsets you can get a newer handset that's just as capable as the iPhone for a fraction of the cost.0 -
It'll be interesting to see what O2 do with thousands of year old iPhones.0

so basically you have a a rather expensive contract and you dont get to keep the phone sounds like a poor deal to meReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0
