You no longer have to report in person to the police, a phone call is enough if there are no injuries.

As for the blame, im afraid you are entirely to blame as the car was stationary. Someone also mentioned reversing into the space - this should be common sense and in actual fact if it was on a public road it would be illegal to reverse out of the space, however a supermarket is private property.

As a driving instructor i always train people to reverse into any space or driveway for safety reasons.

While I agree in part have you ever tried loading a trolley full of bags into your car that's reversed into a space at a supermarket while the wind is blowing? However, I blame that on supermarkets for not having large enough spaces!

Yes i agree with you that it is not easy! As you say spaces could be bigger. I also find there are too many people that find it impossible to be in the centre of the bay and park right on one of the white lines!

I have to say that the standard of drivers in this country is poor overall mainly due to the way attitudes have changed over the last 20 years, everyone is in a rush and only considers themselves. I am a big supporter of the idea that everyones driving should be re-assessed on a regular basis. This not only is good for the overall standard but also wouldn't most people like to know if their driving was unsafe and therefore better themselves?.......... Rant over. :)

it's easier than trying to reverse out of the space when it's dark, wet and windy.

These are better for the supermarket run...

Make sure the driver's wearing a crash helmet though - elf & safety. :)

Give us a break it's a supermarket carpark, you have just been standing at the back of the car to load up the shopping

How hard is it to look behind you and check the space you are going to reverse into BEFORE you get in the car?
  • regardless. A person could have been waiting in that spot for another motorist coming out of a bay, you reverse and hit it because you failed to properly check no one was behind you, mirrors have blindspots so over the shoulder check is basic part to check that spot, your tought this in leaerning to drive.
what makes this worse is that you returned to your vehicle knowing it was there, you were shopping so must have put things in the boot right next or oppsite the vehicle parked up.

you probably assumed there was space enough to squeeze out, caught the car and now wish push blame for that person leaving it parked in that mannor, its not upto you to ensure other motorists abide by the supermarkets terms and conditions of parking thats upto the supermarket to enforce, and is not relevant to this situation.

I was looking over my left shoulder trying to avoid the other 2 cars which were parked not in a space. It was the car over my right shoulder that I got too close to.

i'm affraid your fully at fault (and your insurers will see the same if you inform them) you hit a non moving object no matter how it was parked where it was parked and how it was parked, you hit it.

I am not trying to push blame on anyone. I have admitted liability hence informing the police. I have had this done to me where people have not had the decency to do this.
With regards to reversing in, I never do this at this supermarket as it is difficult to get access to the boot, the car park is on a hill and the trolled have no breaks. If I left the trolly to put my shopping or children in the car I would then be hit with a claim for damaging someone's car with a trolley.
