Can you please offer some advice?
Just been to the supermarket and reversed out of a space but bumped a car that was parked behind me blocking my path out of the space( they werent parked in a space). I waited for them to come back but couldn't wait any longer do I've just come home and called the police as I didn't have anything to write details with and my kids were going crackers in the back.
My car isn't damaged, and I couldn't see any new damage, only old damage in their car.
My husband has just gone crackers saying that they are at fault because they weren't in a space. Is he right?

No - you are at fault. You didn't HAVE to drive into it, just because it was in your way.
It would have been considerate to have gone back into the supermarket, and asked CS to put out a shout for the driver of the car, or for a pen and paper at least.0 -
It was your fault, you hit a stationary car. It dosen't matter if it was in a space or not.
You done the right thing though by reporting it to the police within 24 hours as you couldn't leave your details. If the owner contacts the police they will be able to give them your details for insurance etc.0 -

I did consider that but I thought by the time had had dragged my children to the customer service section and waited in the massive queue I might have missed the person coming out.0 -
Did you attend the police station in person to report this?0

how did you manage to hit a car that was blocking your way out of the space, and then manage to get out of the space to go home?0

No. Not at all. You can't just go hitting stationary objects because they are in your way. The only people with a right to do that are the Fire Brigade on an emergency call.
As scheming_gypsey has pointed out, it obviously wasn't that much in your way as you actually managed to get out of the space and go home. Yes it might have required a few shunts to do but it is obvious that the car wasn't the obstruction you claim it was and this was down to your inability to drive. Its also why I REVERSE INTO PARKING SPACES so I can drive out which is a lot easier.0 -
is theres a legal requirment to report it in person? to a local station, or is a phone call to neares area HQ sufficiant, after all the detail the OP give will be in the system.The_Turner wrote: »Did you attend the police station in person to report this?
op it is your fault no one elses they blobked you in yes, but its upto to then go back iinto the supermarket with the reg and have them annouce it over the tannoy that the person with car reg car colour please come to customer services desk asap then when they arrive they can move it, same when you hit it TBH. take any photo's on your phone to prove no other damage was caused?
your fault.0 -
As others have said, it was your fault. But you've informed the police, so I'd leave it at that. If the numpty who abandoned his/her car in the car park because he/she couldn't wait for, or use, a marked space, what are they going to do if they notice another dent in it? Hardly going to go to the police are they?
I'd not worry about it too much, you'll probably hear no more.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. yah,you can't claim anything ,it was your fault,as the slyracoon says 'you hit a stationary car. It dosen't matter if it was in a space or not.'
Wasn't considering trying to claim anything, I'm trying to settle an argument between myself and my husband as to whether they hold any fault for not parking in a space.0 -

regardless. A person could have been waiting in that spot for another motorist coming out of a bay, you reverse and hit it because you failed to properly check no one was behind you, mirrors have blindspots so over the shoulder check is basic part to check that spot, your tought this in leaerning to drive.
what makes this worse is that you returned to your vehicle knowing it was there, you were shopping so must have put things in the boot right next or oppsite the vehicle parked up.
you probably assumed there was space enough to squeeze out, caught the car and now wish push blame for that person leaving it parked in that mannor, its not upto you to ensure other motorists abide by the supermarkets terms and conditions of parking thats upto the supermarket to enforce, and is not relevant to this situation.
i'm affraid your fully at fault (and your insurers will see the same if you inform them) you hit a non moving object no matter how it was parked where it was parked and how it was parked, you hit it.0
