I bought some dormant strawberry plants, and now ive planted them out im kinda nervous.
I want, strawberry's ... no i NEED strawberries.. haha and im REALLY worried about them, how long does it take before i'll see some life do you think? because im seriously tempted to go and buy some "plants" grown green leafy ones just in case.
Im just terribly scared that these ones are already dead and i'll end up with no strawberry's at all... that would be a disaster. I bought 6 plants and im not holding out for tons of strawberry's this year, more hoping for runners to start my little strawberry invasion of the garden haha.
Soooo ... when should i start to "see life" if they are indeed alive, rather than dead like i suspect.0 -

You need patience if you're going to make a gardenerIf you've planted them into good ground and they have enought water, they should start growing in a week or so :T I bought some plants by post and they looked terrible, but started showing new green leaves after a few days.
If yoyu want these plants to thrive and produce fruit for several year, you should be allowing them to put all their energy into producing good root systems this year, so remove all the runners, and only allow one or two pfruit perplant. See - patience
I'll add this to the exisitng strawberry thread to give you more ideas.

Oh yeah i know they wheren't gonig to just pop up out of the ground in a few days haha... im just didn't want to be staring at my pots of earth in 6 weeks if by then its clear they are indeed DEAD!, ok i'll give them about 2 weeks and see how they are looking before concidering panic buying more... these just looked Soooo dead i wasn't sure anything could possibly grow from them
My husband thinks i've LOST the plot, 15years together and he's never seen me so much as step foot in the garden, now i have pots and tubs EVERYWHERE!!! yay ... :T
How many strawberry plants would you say a family of 4 needs?? i have other soft fruit plants too so im thinking there is only SOooo many we can eat, but im so excited hubby has FINNALLY agreed to the 2nd freezer ive been buging him for.0 -

Mine are planted in the ground, so get left out in all weathers - that's what they expect
Did you have fruit from them lst yearIf so, give them a general feed (pelleted chicken manure or growmore) and they should have more fruit this summer :T

There are some great ideas here. Are all types of strawberry plants suitable for hanging and stacking? I ask, because I have 6 plants but not sure what type (if you get types of strawberrys that is:o :rotfl: )
Also, what compost do they prefer?
