I know, I just think the regs should be for security rather than exploiting a captive audience with punitive charges.
But we all know the regs are not for security, they are knee jerk reaction to something that happened a long time ago. So what is to stop me putting enough explosives in separate 100ml bottles, or getting together with 4 of my terrorist cohorts and each using our liquid allowance to get through security them mixing it all together when we are air-side?
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • stoneman is right that there are ways round this control. I think it's what's known as "security theatre" where governments and organisations like to be seen to do something to address a security threat even if it doesn't really address the risk.

Checking in liquids is the thing to do if you can, but the airlines don't want us to check in any bags remember and indeed Ryanair will charge up to 200 pounds return next year for checking in bags at the airport.

I accept there is a small cost of sales for the bags. Okay, I'd be happy if they charged 5p a bag, how's what? ;-)

And while they do 'cost' a few pence each they do cost to give out. And it costs to account for the cash.
That's what the airport security charge is for, which the airport bills the airline and which the airline incorporates into the total price of your ticket. These charges should not be added at the airport when the passenger has already paid for the security check in line with international standards.
