Hypnotherapy for slimming

Evening

After starting and failing too many times I've booked myself a starter session with a hypnotherapist this week. I'm curious as much as anything else.
My main reason for choosing this 'aid' is I want to change my thought food patterns, and this is exactly what she said to me on the phone today is the key. i liked to hear this, it just what I wanted.

Anyone had experience of this type of slimming.

I have a friend who did the Alan carr in the summer for smoking and stopped, never interested to this day so far to have 1. i know its not the same but there are eliments.

I'd love to hear others experiences good and bad and what you believed before you attended.

Thanks.

I think this is mainly a placebo therapy, so if you believe it will work, it probably will.

Its hard to find an answer, because the reason people eat too much can be widely different...just having too big meals, for example, or grazing all the time without really thinking about it.

I've known 4 people who have tried it, 1 found it helped her immensely, 1 changed for a while but then reverted back to old ways, and 2 didn't find it made any difference.

All you can do is give it a try. I hope it works for you!
  • yes, I agree with your sentiments.

My biggest (wrong word) beef with slimming clubs is the constant food thoughts, hopefully if she can help me with that, then maybe my food battle can be won.

    Thanks.
  • i haven't ever tried this but have thought about it many times, I am overweight myself and can completely relate to the struggle with diets.

If you find this does not work please consider slimming world, i've tried just about every diet on the planet and have found this to be by far the best diet ever, it is not calorie controlled so you can eat as much as you like and you have syns so can have whatever you fancy allbeit in moderation, I found with slimming world i am never hungry because i simply do not need to stop eating and with a few changes of treats i am still allowed to eat crisps and chocolate every day if i want to.

Saying all this i'm currently off the wagon but planning to join after xmas for the last time!!

    good luck x

Would you make an appointment to go to a new hairdresser 'on spec' and then ask a forum whether hairdressers were any good? No, of course not. You'd do some homework, make enquiries about the individual and talk to people who had their hair styled at that hairdressers.

The questions that you ask should be put to the hypnotherapist.

How many successful cases of weight loss/changed eating patterns have you achieved through your methods and in how many have the clients found it no help at all?
How many people have you hypnotherapised/hypnotised (or whatever the terms is) for weight loss/changing eating patterns?

Personally, I wouldn't engage with any sort of business/counselling relationship without getting references.

Hypnotherapy is said to be effective for such things as helping people lose weight, quit smoking, or overcome a phobia. Most of the evidence for the effectiveness of hypnotherapy is anecdotal, despite the claims of such groups as the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). Not surprisingly, all the anecdotes are positive! Nobody collects examples of failures or tells the world about their "incomplete successes." If one compares the characteristics of the placebo effect and those of hypnotherapy it is hard to distinguish the difference between these two ducks. Both work because participants believe they work and they occur in a clinical setting where the client is highly motivated for the therapy to work and the provider has all the accoutrements of the healing arts. Suggestion is the heart and soul of both. Hypnosis adds such things as asking the client to relax (important for suggestion to work) or to concentrate on something (which may be completely superfluous).

Some hypnotherapists seem to use CBT in their work and it may well be that the CBT and the placebo effect are what accounts for a success here or there with a highly motivated client.* One practitioner, Ronda Graf, says that most people respond to visual suggestions and imagery. She guides smokers to see themselves as nonsmokers, fat people to see themselves as thin, etc., and gives them "anchors" to reinforce the imagery. For example, she teaches her clients to say to themselves, "Cancel, cancel, cancel, I'm in control," when they're tempted to smoke or go for the cheesecake.* We usually have no way of knowing whether the client could have lost weight or quit smoking without the hypnosis because all we know for sure is that in the past the client tried to lose weight or quit smoking, and she failed; but during the hypnotherapy she lost weight or quit smoking. Since we have nothing to compare it to, we have no way of knowing how much hypnosis contributed to the changed behavior and how much came from the person's strong motivation to change, her belief in the therapy, etc.

I tried the gastric band hypnosis - for the first couple of days I fell asleep listening to it, and weirdly I wasn't hungry and didn't want to eat. On the 3rd night I listened to it all the way through and thought what a load of bow-locks.....and started snacking as before....????

The most weight I've lost is on the Paul McKenna Think yourself thin, but you do have to listen to it everysday.

Weight loss is a case of eating the right food, at the right time. As you get older, exercise makes this easier as it keeps your metabolic rate up

Save your money on the hypnotherapy and slimming groups, spend your time researching the correct foods to eat, and how and when to eat them

Look on fitness forums, the best advice for slimming will be on body building forums, as they aim to look good through diet and exercise
  • i've tried paul mckenna a few times in the past without any real results but earlier this year i decided it was make or break time, 'lose it now girl, for the very last time, or you'll be fat for the rest of your life!' type of conversation with myself, as you do! :D

tried mckenna again & it's really stuck with me this time. my tastes have completely changed, i actually want to eat healthily & even the thought of my beloved salt & vinegar crisps makes me almost heave, bizarre!

i've still got a way to go, but i'm a few pounds away from a 4 stone loss since mid May. i'm exercising 3-4 times a week, aqua aerobics & recently back on the 'machines' at the gym. really enjoying it, even if it hard work & i nearly always get asked just as i fall off the last machine 'you alright love?' :o 'i will be in a minute!' :p

i think the key is where your mindset is, if you really WANT to do it, whatever method you go for, it will work. for me, i know it's not something to stick to for 6-12 months, this is how i need to live to be fitter & healthier for the rest of my life.

i still have the odd glitch but i'm an emotional eater, the main thing is that i'm aware of this now. one bad day doesn't mean you throw the rest of the week away, which is what i used to do. i always remember when i was with weight watchers, hardly anything to eat or drink on weigh day, then get a chinese takeaway on the way home! not to be recommended...

good luck in whatever you decide to do, if you're doing it for the right reasons ie. yourself & not anyone else, you shouldn't go far wrong :)
