Big congrats Sanya. I'm with PotatoPotato. Tess was what first sprang to mind for me as well.

Anyone else want me to get their coat while I'm there?

    One of mine does that!

Actually all swans are NOT owned by the Queen, this was once discussed on QI, confirmed here, she owns unmarked mute swans on open water http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8158652.stm

Therefore it would seem if the swan was unmarked and was not a mute swan then it doesn't belong to anyone and is fair game. HOWEVER saying he "can't sell it through the shop" is hardly a testiment to legality. Up to you whether you report it but you have probably already committed a crime here.

Please note this passage in the above article:While the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act protects all swans and makes it illegal to kill them, the Queen still technically owns all the swans in Great Britain, except for those in the Orkney Islands where the swans belong to the people. However, the Wildlife and Countryside Act applies in the Orkney Islands as well, which limits the rights of the people of the Orkney Islands to watching but not killing or eating their swans.
