    Polite time here....
The cable in question, I presume its a Monster or a Belkin AVPure. JamieF is correct in his assumption that there is no degradation over that distance, due to the fact that it is digital. However, there is also the problem of outside interference, and as most home entertainment areas are packed full of devices & cables which pump out a fair whack of EMF (electromagnetic field), which can put stray 1s and such like onto the incoming signal. Which can degrade the picture somewhat, by basically pumping out rubbish which the cable, acting as an aerial, picks up and feeds to the screen. Poorly shielded would be even worse, and may in certain circumstances very much affect picture quality.
I'm a CCTV engineer who uses all sorts of cameras, analogue, digital, and even IP cameras, and run alongside cables for any distance, you will get some form of interference unless shielding is used. So much so that it is a requirement of most alarm panel manufacturers that the alarm systems are now wired in Belden cable, which has the best shielding you can get on any cable- so good its the best for speaker cable I have ever found. ;)
    Just my tuppence worth.
  • Thanks for the input tbird3.
The cable I purchased was a Qunex, I didnt pay OTT or was ripped off as some may say, I managed to find a website selling them at £31 for a 1 metre which is a good price when looking at around at other sites selling at £45+. I purchased this specific cable due to the amount of awards it received and written reviews, backing up what you have just said in terms of its over all performance and shielding etc as stated in my previous post.

Jamief - I appreciate what you're saying in the signal transmission but I dont agree with you in the fact that im just as well off with a £5 cable as I am with my Qunex £31 cable. I personally made the choice best suited for me and have an excellent picture when watching dvds, I have no interference from my other electrical equipment so be it my cable or other im happy. :T

replicant69 - If you are happy, that is fine, and that isn't too excessive a price imo - I've seen 5m versions of that cable go for >£100! I'm happy with the cable I'm using, which cost I think £3 - It runs beside cables for my xbox360, hd media player, speaker cable, and sits around 1 foot from my wireless router and PC. not had any problems with interference :)

Fair play, I cant say more as im not that technical minded on these, only know what I've read up on, like you though Ive seen the 5mtr versions of these from £100+ easy!! Sounds like you have a good setup with everything running along side each other, I cant comment if my cable has or hasnt made a difference as I jumped straight in at the top so I wouldnt change later, But im happy with the setup & performance I have so apologies again if you were offended...

I think the main thing is that we all enjoy our setups :)

I have recently bought a 10" portable DVD player with a Freeview TV tuner.

However, the only way I have been able to see any TV has been by plugging my TV aerial into it, which defeats the object, of course!

I bought a supposed booster aerial from Argos, but it did not work, can anyone suggest an aerial which may work, and is portable.

    Thanks

Well I suppose I better get a "gold-plated-quadruple-insulated-methane-injected" USB cable that links my Xbox 360 to the HD-DVD add on then otherwise I'll be missing out.... :wall:

Outputs 1080i and plays MPEG4 & DIVX the specs say. So it will play a "hi-def" 1920x1080 MPEG4 or DIVX file then, similar to an actual HD-DVD / BluRay player?

Nope. Is a Toyota MR2 Ferrari 355 kit car as good as the real thing?....

If you have 1920x1080 (1080p) display, congrats your display is upscaling already watching corrie. Doesn't mean it will look any good though.

Never heard of TV's upscaling, that's news to me - I was under the impression it was the source input that determined upscaling.

I work at Curry's and even I know TV's upscale :rotfl:

Yes, anyone who spends £30 on a 1m HDMI cable is being ripped off, I'm afraid.

There will be NO bit errors unless your cable or equipment is faulty. "Outside interference" will not make any difference in a domestic setting, unless you live in a microwave oven ;). That's the whole point of using a digital interface. If HDMI were really as flaky as the cable merchants would have you believe, then it would never have been adopted as a standard.

All this attempt to sell overpriced cables is marketing based on pseudo-scientific technobabble or outright lies. Magazines will plug (no pun intended) overpriced cables because they are advertised in those magazines. And the human mind has an enormous capacity for self-delusion which can convince it of all sorts of things that aren't really happening: just consider why placebos are used in drug tests. The marketing is a joke; the tragedy is the number of people it hooks, because they sincerely believe the marketing.

Buy your HDMI cables on eBay. They will work fine - and "fine" means perfectly. Less than £5 for 1m.

    Moneysave.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
