I'm sorry but what the BH can I get. I work stupid hours as does DP but once mortgage and council tax etc are paid I have no more disposable income than someone on benefit. My ex gets more in benefit then I earn but chooses to pay no maintenance and apparently that's fine.

I wanted to go to work to teach my boys that that's the responsible way to live your life but why do I sodding bother - I could stay at home and get the same money I do now and take no responsibility for my own life and other people would carry my burden - down to BG covering my bills - they don't hesitate to contact me if they think my DD is too low.

    Any need to get personal?

I was in your shoes last year ~ this year I'm not and touch wood, I won't be in this situation for longer than 2-3 more months.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother explaining myself

rachnbri, no one forced you to have kids and maybe if you had payed attention at school you would be able to get a better job

rachnbri, my dh works hard but is on a low wage around 10k a year for a 35+ hours a week, so we qualify for working tax credits,We have to pay full rent council tax and dont quailfy for nothing else.So if bg want to offer a rebate to people claiming working tax credits im going to go and get it.Which i have done this year and last, am i wrong for doing this?? NO

Missile: Thanks for your exceptionally patronising comment but I actually worked very hard at school and have done very well for myself which is why I don't qualify for any handouts. Yes I know no-one forced me to have children but someone's got to pay for your retirement eh? (And I can spell!!)

Seriously though, I apologise for offending anyone. Until a few years ago I was a single mum on benefits - none of this help was available then. I decided that I wanted to get back to work and no help was available there either, so maybe I am a little bitter. But I don't have any issue with people who are on benefits because they are bringing up a young family alone, or because they are sick, or because they are caring for an unwell relative

But my real dig was at British Gas, who market themselves to be socially responsible and "ooh we look after our poor customers on benefits" when actually they're totally ripping the average working family off to the tune of hundreds of pounds a year.

dlb - I'm not saying you're wrong for doing this - I'm saying that if British Gas want to be a socially conscious utility provider they should decrease their massive profits to give relief to all working families - instead of ripping some of us off to provide for others. After all we all use a similar amount of their product - should Tesco reduce their prices for people on a lower income?
