PS3 - Argos taking pre-orders now

The Ebayers will be taking quite a risk on this one.
The PS3 is already selling on Ebay for less than it's list price in America (About 550 dollars or £300) the price over here is £425. There are very few killer games available at the moment, some are due in the future but no reason to force people to buy the PS3 now and there is no Xmas deadline.
There will be approx a quarter of a million unit in the UK for launch.
It is possible that they will all sell out (mainly to ebayers) but I am not so sure that the Ebay price will stay high for more than a few days. and £425 is quite a gamble.0 -
Unless I am much mistaken there is a zero risk with this transaction.
If the prices on Ebay are deflated then you can just return the unit(s) to an argos store for a full refund.
The only loss would be a 4.95 delivery charge.0 -

And the loss of interest on the £425 and the cost of the Ebay listing fee for the unsold item. And the wasted effort. But you are right much less risk than the full £425.
Perhaps a better risk would be to order from Amazon, then if they all go in 10 minutes keep it but if they take more than a day to sell out cancel.0 -
The PS3s that are sale in England are worth the extra money for many reasons as opposed to the US or japanese imports even the Honk kong ones which are PAL are inferior to the UK ones the main reasons being:-
- The blue ray Films are region B encoded only on PAL UK consoles
- Only UK PAL consoles can connect to the Sony Europe Online
- Only UK PAL consoles can play UK PAL PS1/PS2 games
- Sony Europe will only honour the warranty on PAL UK consoles
N.B PS3 games are region free at the moment but it is only a firmware update by Sony to make consoles region locked.
Therefore because of this it is worth the extra money to buy a genuine UK console and not a cheaper inferior to the UK import on ebay to save yourself a few hundred pounds as you will get all the benefits listed above.
Please also be aware that although the PS3 is not perfect at the moment the firmware as mentioned is updateable like the PSP so all the imperfections can be ironed out and new features introduced (just remember how awful the xbox 360 was at launch it couldn't even upscale DVDs properly to say the least microsoft released various updates since to fix over 200 problems)
Therefore this is an excellent opportunity to buy a proper UK console for launch before all the UK allocation have been sold out!!!0 -

I wasn't suggesting that anyone tried to import a PS3 from the US, I was pointing out that in America the PS3 is already selling at 10% less than list price on EBAY. I think in your post you should have been using the word unsuitable and not inferior. The PS3 made for Japan USA and Hong Kong is not inferior to the U.K. version just unsuitable .......and cheaper.0 -
Good points, well made on both sides.
I'm torn. Not being a hardened gamer I'm loving the playability of the Wii, however the OH is a tech fan uber-lover of all things gadgety.... it's a lot of money though, but our anniversary is coming up so it may be his anniversary/birthday/xmas pressie this year lol
I'll be casually sounding him out over the next cpl of weeks:rotfl:0 -

PS3's are exempt from the 30 day money back guarantee, in effect you can't take it back because you don't want it, unless it's faulty !!0 -
Ooo, another good point lol
This thread is getting interesting...:rotfl:0 -
Actually, I just looked.... the refund t&c on the site say:If a product is excluded from our 30-day money-back guarantee, it is clearly marked by a † next to the product name in the catalogue and on this website.
But the PS3 (and accessories) don't have the †... unlike the wii & accessories:rotfl:0 -
has anyone else been slightly put off preordering with argos after the has they made of the wii?0
