why would you keep the email in the inbox though, I read an email and if I don't require that email again I hit archive and done

the excellent gmail search function works for archived emails you know.

I also use filters to add labels to incoming email for different accounts, eg facebook, twitter ect.

also instead of going direct into mail.google.com
try
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#apps/Label%3Aunread (that will take you directly to only the unread emails)
Also check the little cog and set the "Display Density" to "compact" that will take away most of the wasted white space and give you more room to read the emails.

No, you never used to be able to put things in folders with gmail.

It has ALWAYS used labels.

Use the priority inbox from the labs, label your mails and archive them when read.

Simples.
