New look GMail

Hi all

I've got a GMail account and I'm seriously beginning to consider dumping it.
I hate the new look.
You used to be able to put things in folders, now you can only mark them with labels.
I like to keep my inbox relatively clear and this is going to drive me nuts.
Granted, I use Thunderbird at home (so filing is easy), but I also use the web-portal at work.

Google doesn't seem to have a lot of info, but has anyone come across a "fix" for this?

    *Bit of a rant!!!*
I know people have an irrational urge to see an empty mail box... but why?
It's not costing you anything to store your emails?

If you *MUST* see an empty mailbox just search for "Label:unread" after you're read everything then problem solved.

I don't want to see an empty mailbox, just a tidy one.
If I've dealt with something, or it's only for info, I don't want it cluttering things up.

Inbox for not dealt with or pending. Folders for action taken but wish to keep (divided according to topic). It may not be your preference but calling it irrational is a bit of an overstatement!

Click on the big gear cog icon (not the small one in the top right corner) and select revert to old look.

    Got it, ta.
My works browser is out of date so I had to force the full new look into place first.

Not sure I see the problem. If you just use a single label per message it behaves in much the same way as a folder. Archive the message and it no longer appears in the inbox. It seems to behave in much the same way in the 'new look' as it did in the 'old look'.

That makes a bit more sense now.
So you add a label and then hit archive and it disappears.
How will the message appear when I log into Thunderird at home? Will it be in that folder?

gmail has only ever had labels, and they work the same way now as they ever have done, you can set filters to automatically add labels to messages or you can add labels yourself, you can add more than one labels to a message, and you can set filters so email skips the inbox which you can couple with the 'show label if unread' function, so it is like having multiple inboxes.

apart from the new look gmail works exactly how it did before the new look.
