Who on earth would trust one of those "Hose Drain plugs"? a little bit of dirt gets trapped under the seal when you drain, and bingo.

Me... it's best £30 i've spent. Hasn't let me down and the oil can be drained with 10 secs of turning off the engine.

    Just get this: http://www.seamarknunn.com/acatalog/info_PL176634.html

Removes it all, not a drop left when I double checked it.

Then he will say "I can't get the filter off"

I really hate to do this but I cannot loosen the sump plug on my Peugeot 306 HDI. It's bloody impossible and the weather is now really cold which makes it unpleasant to even try. How much should I expect to pay for a garage to do this? Is it worth getting them to use the oil and filter I have bought or will I not same much doing this?

Just take it to Quickfit or similar, ask one of the lads to do it for you using your oil + filter and slip him a few quid.:)

Oil and filter changes by the major fast fit chains are so cheap I've not bothered changing my own for over a decade now, despite being a qualified mechanic with a full set of tools.

I'm not sure how much a garage would charge for an oil change, but I reckon it's unlikely to be much less than £45, unless they are doing it as a loss-leader in the hope of finding other things that need fixing.

Kwik-Fit et al are around £20-£25.

The manager at National Tyres admitted that their oil-change is a loss leader.
Not to mention all the stripped sump plug threads where theyev had to replace the sump at their cost.

Doing it myself with Vauxhall oil and a filter costs me about £15.

For ten minutes work I save £20.
