getting a garage to change the oil
I really hate to do this but I cannot loosen the sump plug on my Peugeot 306 HDI. It's bloody impossible and the weather is now really cold which makes it unpleasant to even try. How much should I expect to pay for a garage to do this? Is it worth getting them to use the oil and filter I have bought or will I not same much doing this?

If you can get the garage to use the oil and filter, then say about £15 for the work, (I would hope) from an independent.
I know national (are they now Halfords?) used to charge about £21 for an oil and filter change. It may be worth taking it to them, but I bet they wont use your parts quoting health and safety. Even if they wont use them, then pay £20 ish and save the parts for the next oil change.
Pug main dealers will probably want an hours labour to do it, but they will probably let you use your parts.0 -
You can buy a Pela 6000 oil extractor for about £45, which sucks the oil out through the dipstick tube. It turns oil changes into a fairly civilized and clean operation.
I'm not sure how much a garage would charge for an oil change, but I reckon it's unlikely to be much less than £45, unless they are doing it as a loss-leader in the hope of finding other things that need fixing.0 -
I fitted one of these sum plugs (the compact version) that allow you drain at full temp, straigh into a tub.
Fantastic for the DIYers. No mess no hassle and it drains as soon as you screw the hose on.
It cost about £30 or so, but well worth it an you drain the lot unlike an extractor which is bound to leave some in the bottom.

This.
I've used a similar oil extractor. They can take a while to suck all the oil out, but it does make it a much more pleasant job.
While it sucks the oil out you can sit inside with a nice cup of tea.0 -
Or you could visit one of the fast fit chains - they can be good value for oil changes0

I called National and they quoted £35 for normal 10w40 oil and £52 for 5w400

You are obviously incapable of doing a simple oil change service for yourself, so you will have to take it somewhere to be done and pay the price.
