Very Rude Estate Agent

  • It is possible that the viewing was after work (you said there was no out of hours phone number indicating the office was shut) and that he had stayed on late to accommodate you and was a bit fed up standing in the cold after he should have gone home. If you moved 3 car lengths in 5 mins and you were 5 mins normal driving away then there is no way you would have only been another 5 mins - it may have taken you another half hour or more to get there.

Just playing devils advocate although it was still wrong to be rude.

    Ring up today.
    Book another viewing.

Were the jams due to rush hour traffic (Perhaps the EA would have known this?) or due to an accident (in which case say: "what awful delays yesterday but at least no one died..." or "Awful traffic after that accident, that poor woman"

An EA that books viewings at rush hour with people who will be caught up in rush hour traffic is an idiot.

I assume it was them doing the viewing - if it was the OO then they'd be there all night. But if the OO has left the house so the EA can do the viewing in peace (perhaps took the kids out) then you being delayed is a PITA.

My advice would be to book it for DAYLIGHT - which means at this time of year if you work wait til Saturday.

That was my first thought but they are apparently open until late every day.

At the point my girlfriend called him back the obstruction cleared and the traffic had started moving freely again.

The person who phoned us was not the person who was waiting for us at the house and we don't actually know who he was or what his position was.

I take that point but would say that the estate agent doesn't know that from talking to you on the phone and should therefore hedge his bets and behave himself. His first response to a slight delay should not be to give someone a lecture on timekeeping.

i've had that, they look at me like I haven't got 2p rubbed together but do have the savings. One in particular (which has a house i am interested in) looked at me and even said that she didn't think i would get a mortgage. Hence when the guy phoned me on what i thought i had an awful lot to say. I'm not looking forwards to Fridays viewing!

The thing is, the EAs get loads of time wasters, especially the "first Time buyers". Most of the time the guy just wants to impress his girlfriend by taking her to view a few properties, to show off and look like he is loaded. But when it comes to the crunch, he WON'T GET A MORTGAGE.
That's no justification for an EA being downright rude to any potential buyer. If the EA is incapable of dealing with people in a professional manner then he should seek alternative employment.

The name Richard Sole may well be a possibility;)
  • I would have reminded him to get off his high horse, put back on his 'Next' shirt and tie combo pack, get back in his Audi TT (on tick) and realise that he is nothing more than a walking bulletin board!

Lord knows how these estate agents have created this persona of god like status?
  • It wasn't F*xtons, was it?
  • I'm not defending rudeness but it's frustrating when a viewer is late, especially if you are doing an out of hours viewing OR when the late viewer then makes you late for your next appointment and you have those clients screaming at you because you are late yourself.
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

Of course it can be "frustrating" but look at what the OP said:

Unfortunately there had been an accident at the roundabout that we had to pass through to get there which resulted in us looking like we were going to be late. The estate agent hadn't given us an out of hours contact number so we couldnt call and let him know.
As an EA if you want buyers/sellers to keep you informed then give them the means to contact you.

If the EA was going to made late for a further appointment he could simply have said "ok guys, the situation is clearly beyond your control so can we reschedule as I am running out of available time this evening"
