Avoid Santander like the plague. if things go wrong you're on your own, the staff are inadequately trained or just don't care, you choose which.
  • First Direct are the best bank I've been with :).

Santander are great, their customer service is second to none and their transfers are so easy and fast. Their fees are reasonable too

    ..... ANYWAY

+1 for First Direct - an excellent brand of HSBC for someone who can pass their credit scoring.

Unfortunately I didn't last time I applied :( No matter, HSBC will do for the next couple years. They're almost as good.

HSBC for sure. They don't have as many subsidiaries / brands as other high street banks and are very stable with good customer service :o

I would agree that HSBC are a good choice, that said if you do a lot of telephone banking you may find their overseas call centres a pain. If this would be a problem then maybe Natwet may be a viable alternative.

I'd avoid NatWest - I had a student acc with them. They repeatedly revoked my student status asking me to come in yet again with proof of my student status. Each time, they charged me fines for an "unauthorised overdraft" (I'd used about £50 of my student overdraft before they removed student status from my acc, rendering the overdraft supposedly unauthorized...).

This continued for several months, and I contested the debt. So they sold it on to a third party debt collector.

    How nice of them.

I would never bank with NatWest again.

Have used Halifax for over a decade and never had any problems with them, though.

Not everyone can be pleased with their bank. I was with Natwest for 10+ years and NEVER had a problem with them. They provided everything I ever asked for and the service was always first class!!

I have recently switched to the Co-op after a long time of thinking about doing it as I have taken one of their packaged accounts which was a lot better than Natwest's and the fact that they were offering the £200 switching bonus. Up to now I haven't had any issues with Co-op either.

As you will see, some people have problems and some don't.
