OP I do think it's your business - people are given considerably more control over their pets than over their children (for example), so there is no authority that will get involved in a situation like this and the dog cannot speak for itself. My cat was recently ill for apparently no reason (fine the day before, barely moving about/not eating the next) and when we took him to the vet we were told that cats will hide their pain and by the time you notice they're sick they may already have been sick for some time.

I'm not sure if the same applies to dogs but if so the dog may actually be in quite a bit of pain. I think you should speak to your friend and try to get her to focus on how the badly the dog is feeling. Postponing it when it is definitely going to be put to sleep anyway and is already overcome with the sickness is just prolonging it's suffering, of what purpose is this to the dog? Although I love my own cat immensely, watching it suffer, being unable to do the things I know it loves to do, and knowing it's not going to get better would be so much harder than putting it sleep. I'm sure it's hard for your friend but she's needs to put the needs of her dog first. Perhaps getting the input of a vet would help convince her? An expert's opinion might hold more weight in her mind...
  • what has happened to dog?...
your friend is obviously hurting badly with the thought of putting pet to sleep but she has to do it,...in the future when she is less emotional she will remember not putting him out of misery and she will prob suffer till the day she dies thinking ,oh god i kept my poor dog alive prob in pain.......
i had to put my dog to sleep and it made me very ill ,i lost 1 and half stone in weight , but i done it as soon as vet advised me ..i went home and had a last half hour with her before vet called to house to put her to sleep..me and husband with both heartbroken . one second her eyes was alight then the next they went dim exactly as if a light was switched off..
  • Winter .... sorry as I'm not trying to be rude or anything - but do you really need to keep replying on old / dead threads and putting them back on the top of the board especially the distressing ones particularly at the start of the year when people are trying to be positive....... I've already noticed the one with the kitten being abused etc and a couple of others.

Sorry, but these threads are very hard to deal with / respond to when they're originally posted (but we do as we're trying to help) and, TBH once they move off the front page and you can try to put the horrors of them out your mind ....

Obviously, if the OP needs more help / support then fine ... but why drag old horrible threads up again?

    Have to agree Winter, sorry.

I see that you're quite new here so you're probably not aware that its not really 'done' to resurrect older threads unless you're the OP with some new information.
  • sorry, i did not think..won,t do it again..i just was worried on this one incase dog was being kept hanging on. i just wasnted to put this in
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had some happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Please stay with me until the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my gentle purr will end,
From pain and suffering you must send.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I can't imagine that anyone is aware of that Person One. I've been on here yonks, and had no idea.

If you choose to share something online, and then don't update on the outcome, surely it's natural for people to come back and ask!

I don't think it was unreasonable to reopen this thread, afterall its only from early December. I 'd subscribed to it actually to see what the outcome was.
  • My issue was that Winter seemed to be going through re-opening a lot of old threads (and some are very distressing) ..... as stated before they are hard to deal with but we do to try to help ... and once "dealt" with, they should be left unless the OP needs more help / support / has more info etc. If you want an update, PM the OP.
