I set up a slug-pub yesterday. Used the top from a 25 DVD spindle pack. Put it in the garden upside down and poured in about an inch of lager (Tesco's value) that I left open for three days to go stale. I had a look this morning to see if it worked. WOW. 11 dead slugs.
One old time tip that really works.

My first sowing's been in for about four weeks now and a couple of centimetres high. They're under a plastic cloche (£1 from Poundland) partly to get them going, but also to deter the birds. They ate the lot, last year!
My plan is to have a constant crop from June until October, using successive sowings. Will switch to fleece for protection from the birds, once it gets too hot for the cloche.
I adore Swiss Chard - beautiful flavour and very, very nutritious & healthy
I'm sure you'll be pleased to know I've planted them!
Put lots of veggies in today. Still killing off my tomato plants tho- not sure what I've done wrong as I've not grown them from seed before I've always bought the little plants!

Can I join in?
Yesterday I planted garlic and red onions to go with the strawberries that were already here when I moved in. If my DH gets round to putting up the hanging basket I got yesterday (or shows me how to use the drill so I can do it myself!) I'll be planting trailing toms in that. I'm also planning to plant some potatoes.
Does that sound like enough for a first foray into fruit and veg or should I get carried away and plant some more?!?0 -
Well I'm feeling a bit left out so I would just like to add that I'm growing........................cress!Herman - MP for all!0

I would get some little pots of compost and carefully replant your surviving tomato plants. Seedlings don't need much water - you only need as much as it takes to stop the compost drying out.
Some nice dry compost might be enough to rescue them!:j0 -

You could grow bean sprouts and any other sprouting bean - they just need somewhere dark, like mushrooms. I used to grow them on the top shelf that I didn't use regularly in my old flat. Very satisfying to have beansprouts for dishes without paying 99p odd for a whole bag that rots on me :-) Mustard and cress can be grown with a little light?!

I got my cloche up yesterday and and a second sowing of seeds done. I've planted some sweetcorn in little pots in the mini greenhouse as I love this but find the shop bought cost way too expensive.
I've had a polystyrene herb planter hanging around for years and that's finally been hauled into use too.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Thank you mink.
Actually when I first moved into this house, it had a very bad garden - unkempt, broken rubble etc. It took ages to straighten out and someone told me that growing potatoes was a good way to improve the soil. (No idea why.)
We dug up an area of badly laid tarmac and dug in loads of new compost etc and planted the pots there. We also had tomato plants which I watered erratically and ended up with fruits with burst skins.
I'm afraid I'm not at home with things that need tlc....give me a hammer and drill anyday!Herman - MP for all!0
