If you dont' have propogators use egg boxes, satsuma boxes and meat trays and put a freezer bag round them. Freezer bags can also be labelled if you remember. .

another thing you can do which is superb for finicky plants that don't like being disturbed (parsnips come to mind) is to save all your toilet paper rolls. then stand them upright in a large pan and till 3/4 full with soil. put one or 2 seeds in each roll top up with soil and water the pan not the tubes.

when they are big enough you can put them outside tube and all without disturbing the roots of the plants. just give the tube a good soak before you plant it, the cardboard rots away and you have happy plants!

you could make a propagator this way by doing what i mentioned above and simply addy a large plastic bag over the tin maybe propped up in the middle with a chopstick or something. then just open the bag at the side to water.

Sweetcorn is easy! You are supposed to plant in a block rather than a row for pollination and it grows tall so put it somewhere where it won't block light from lower growing plants. I grow it cos it's one of those things that's a hundred times better when cooked freshly picked. Very easy but needs a lot of room.

if you're growing corn why not also grow pumpkin or other squash at the base of the corn? the pumpkin helps keep the shallow rooting corn from getting uprooted and only needs the same nutrients once the corn has already fruited, great combination! watch out though, pumpkins and squash love to spread out!

Because ... I don't like pumpkins, squashes, or marrows!

Love most veg, can tolerate aubergines and courgettes in a stew type dish but squashes and marrows wouldn't be worth the space in our garden. But sweetcorn, runner beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, any greens ... can't grow enough of them.

He he he :D I think mine will probably all die too. I'm rubbish at gardening. At least you still have plenty of time to plant more.

well now you're just being picky :D

fair point, no reason to grow them if they won't get eaten!

Why isn't anyone growing asparagus?? Its soooo easy...plant it once and it keeps on growing (like weeds!). Have you seen the price of English asparagus in the shops??? 23l8hi

You're supposed to wait til the 3rd year to harvest but I've always picked a few spears as soon as they appear!!
