Is there anything that will grow well in a pot inside? (I.e. on a windowsill - I do have big windowsills, tho at the moment I don't get that much sun.. next year my room will face south though!)

I have got some herbs started, but will anything else cope? :S

I grew the these last year (unsuccessfully, but I blame the rain ;) ) in a little pot in the garden. I'm sure you could grow them on a windowsil:

Tumbler tomatoes (also works really well in a hanging basket)
    Peppers
    Chilli's

I guess you could grow other salad stuff too; spring onions, baby beetroot and possibly certain lettuce.

I have also got a garlic, chives, basil and another herb currently growing happily on my windowsil.

I hope you've got a big windowsil, or lots of windows :D

How big is your windowsil? How about one of those funny little strawberry pots to grow a few strawberries hmmmmm

If you have a low window, could you plant big things like cuecumber, corgette or butternut squash in a big pot on the floor and use canes to hold them up in a wigwam shape over the plant??? - I am not very green fingered so I have no idea if these would work but if you get the seeds from Lidl at 29p a packet it's not so bad if they don't work.
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

I have 2 windows both with very deep sills over a foot wide. I put all my computer stuff on one of them, but I could move it.

I forgot to say I am growing chillis too but they havent sprouted yet :(

Lettuce would be good. Anyone tried this? I might try the tomatoes too!

Do you just stick a clove of garlic in some soil? How long does it take to grow?

Oh, something else I wanted to ask. Can you grow rosemary from cuttings? Does it grow inside happily or not?

Yes you can grow Rosemary from cuttings. Ideally, you want a "heel" cutting. Find a small shoot low down on a main shoot. Carefully peel the small shoot from the main one, so that you actually take a "heel" or scraping of the main stem with it. Now is a good time to do this, as the new shoots are coming through. Try to get a fairly soft new shoot.

Grow inside ... mmmm not really. You just need a sunny spot outside. They're Mediterranean plants so will tolerate poor soil, but need plenty of sun.

This is the one I've got HOL. Not planted it yet tho... :D

Well get on with it ;)

My first sowing's been in for about four weeks now and a couple of centimetres high. They're under a plastic cloche (£1 from Poundland) partly to get them going, but also to deter the birds. They ate the lot, last year!

My plan is to have a constant crop from June until October, using successive sowings. Will switch to fleece for protection from the birds, once it gets too hot for the cloche.

I adore Swiss Chard - beautiful flavour and very, very nutritious & healthy :)

    Has anyone tried growing ginger?

My dad, who has grown everything over the years, said if you plant the root ginger it will grow into a plant with beautiful flowers and the ginger root bit will multiply!

    What do you guys think??

LOL. Yes mum! Am getting out in the garden over weekend actually. Will plant them out. Birds don't usually bother in my garden ... probably the two cats help! :D

i grew some once in an old rubbish bin that i'd poked holes into. i didn't have much success but i used regular soil that was full of clay and i think i watered it too much. try doing a google search, i bet you'll find loads of info on how to grow it. it is my understanding that all you need is a piece from the supermarket to get you started

i wonder, has anyone ever grown sweet potatoes? if so, how? i've never seen starter potatoes for them and they don't seem to sprout eyes like normal potatoes (well actually they are from the morning glory family so that's probably why)
