sorry to bring up an oldish thread but I come home today to find an envelope through the door. It was a small brown envelope which wasn't sealed with my name hand written on the front. A card inside said it was from Akinika Debt Recovery and that I needed to call the rep on a mobile number. The reverse side of the card said "If I don't hear from you i'll call again". Because it wasn't sealed my partner looked at it and so have the kids!!

    WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW??

Should I state I am in dispute as a signature hasn't been provided? and also that its statue barred?
I just don't want anyone coming to my front door as kids will prob open the door

And does it state explicitly what the debt is?

What do you do? Nothing until they explain what this is. Ask for this in writing next time the rep visits

I received one of these letters from the DWP in January, saying I owed for a crisis loan back from 2007 when I was on income Support. it was for £90. I phoned them to ask why it had taken so long to tell me I owed them it.... didn't really get anywhere. I opted for a quiet life as it was just within the 6 year time frame. Arranged a DD for £10 per month. Last payment this month :)

  • Dwp has written to me to state that I owe the just over a thousand pounds from an overpayment dating back to 1994. Yes, that's not a typo, 1994. The chap from dwp who I spoke to said the debt wasn't statute barred, but the letter says they has already taken me to court (I checked my file, nothing there)

What to do? I did receive IS for a short while around that time but honestly don't remember owning them anything.

If they obtained a court order against you more than six years ago it would not show up on any search you could do.

However, if they could supply the court reference, the actual court should be able to confirm if there was indeed a court judgement against you.
