In school kitchens we have to wear hats that the Tetley Tea folk wear in the adverts they are hideous. Also no jewellery at all apart from a wedding band. Short nails no nail varnish or perfume. I hate wearing the hat it makes my hair more greasy than it already is but its part of the uniform. I feel sorry for the op's wife and her workmates it should be up to each individual wether they wear santa hats or not.
most of those are health and safety reasons. contamination, dirt etc..a santa hat in a shop is NOT something that is a legal MUST. are you in a trade union? try consulting them or Acas.. they cant make you do that. nothing in your contract i presume states that not wearing of a santa hat is a disciplinary offence.

Tell him to put it in writing.

This is what I would do.

I'm not good with what I see as being stupid rules if I feel they stem from an individual's wants rather than anything else.

If it was in writing, then it's official. If he wont put it in writing, then he can shove his santa hat up his arris. But then I'm having a rebellious day today. :D I might not feel the same tomorrow. :rotfl:

  • thanks everyone. didnt think it would get this much response :0)
its all about the fact that all the staff feel uncomfortable or a bit silly wearing hats and the principle of it, its another thing in a long line of ' must/must nots ', such as no nail varnish, earings smaller than 5p peice etc.

To be fair those rules are stated in the dress standards book which every colleague and store has to abide by. How long has your OH worked there for? its promoting a very good cause http://www.itv.com/textsanta/ and if every colleague is wearing one she wont feel so silly.

It's a hat ! It's not going to be welded to her head for ever, if it's for a good cause then i can't see what her objections are ! I'd be more worried about coming across as a miserable sod if i refused ! Have you heard the saying "don't sweat the small stuff" ?

I wonder if they conform to the relevant health and safety regs, I wouldn't want felty fluff dropping into me festive stilton.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Would they Ask a Muslim to wear a hat celebrating a Christian festival ?

Why not? Santa hats are festive, not religious.

seems a shame that someone would object doing something so trivial, especially at this time of year
