I have to do my own cleaning but I think you need to think about what sort of thing you want from them perhaps call a couple and ask them to quote0

I would also put in writing what you both agree on before she/he starts and review it occasionally.
Most cleaners want a minimum of two hours work in one place otherwise there's too much travelling between jobs to make it worthwhile working.
Work out whether you need someone for two or three hours. If half the windows were done one week and the other half the following week, a cleaner could do the same hours each week.
How quickly a cleaner can work does depend on how tidy you are. If she/he has to keep moving stuff around in order to clean, it will take longer.0 -
Hi there
I think you are being unrealistic about the amount of time it would take to do all this work. So you expect the cleaner to do in 120 mins::::::
1. dust, vacuum, polish 4 bedrooms.
2. Clean 3 toilets, 3 handbasins, 1 bath, 1 shower (takes a while) and general room clean e.g floors, tiles etc.
3. Clean a kitchen....is it just a wipe down of worktops etc or are you expecting them to wash dishes, clean appliances etc.
4. Then clean all your windows every other week as well. The inside of your house would probably take at least 1 hour / 2 hours to do the windows properly.
5. Do you expect the cleaner to just clean the windows and nothing else on the day that he/she is allocated that task.
I do all my own housework and would love to have someone come in and help. I could afford it but what it would cost me would be at least £50 per week and so it would be a waste of money for me. I consider looking after this house a job in itself.
I think to expect someone to do this amount of work ... you would need to be budgeting at least 4 hours say 9 am to 1 pm and that would be the person running non stop. I don't think that this would be enough time to do all.
Expect to pay about £10 per hour and if you wish to continue ... word of mouth is the best way to find a good cleaner.
Hope this helps. How long does it take you to do this yourself."You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream"C. S. Lewis

Thanks everyone. I should probably have said we have called a couple. Both have said 2 hours, but they send 2 cleaners, bring all their own products (and hoovers etc), clean all appliances (inside and outside of microwave for example), and obviously send someone else if one cleaner is I'll for example. They have said £30 for the two hours for two cleaners, so maybe the 8ish per hour sounds about right as we'll be providing cleaning stuff of course.
Oh and no pets, just one child with a playroom which we won't ask them to clean. The house will be left tidy (surfaces clear etc)

Also I have cats, and I know it can take ages shifting the cat hair off certain materials. And the dammed stuff seems to get everywhere!! As has been said, the time it takes will really depend on how messy you all are0 -
Yes - Sorry I did mean to say that two hours is no where near enough time. Another poster suggested that you try doing it yourself from top to bottom & windows & time yourself with a coffee break inbetween.
You should probably also take into consideration travelling time to & from you & any travelling costs. If you want a good job doing and someone to stick with you then treat them well, pay them decently.
Phone up a cleaning agency & see how much they charge - you'll be shocked.0 -

Are you sure that isn't £30 per hour? If not, it's very cheap and I would want to try them out before committing to a contract. Agencies have to put their costs on top of what they pay the cleaners and that doesn't seem enough money.0 -

Thank you. I have to be honest and say I don't ever do it all in one go, which is why I said I don't know how long and guessed at 2 hours. The cleaning companies did say 2 hours though and one of them does next door, but I really want to pay someone to do the work (as much as they deserve, not less!) so they can work till it's done, however long it takes them.
Hope that makes sense.

I agree with Nikki – set yourself a Saturday and clean everything you would expect to be cleaned (inc windows). Don’t rush it, do it at a normal pace and don’t forget to stop for a cuppa.
I trust that rooms will be tidy for the cleaner (ie they wont be expected to pick up kids toys or do the washing up etc).
When you have found out how long it has taken you, charge £8 for every hour you have done (don’t take out the time it took for your cuppa) and have that set cost per week/month0 -
My mum goes to an elderly lady and cleans once a week, she charges £25 for 4 hours, and does what she can in that time. She is a mother of a friend though. My mum also doesn't work for a cleaning agency or anything and supplies all her own materials.. Through an agency it's usually per hour and anything between £8-£12 an hour, hope that helps
omg! thats only 17p per hour over minimum wage....before expenses!! will she do mine do you think - I've never been able to afford such luxuries but at that price....:D:beer:0
