How much do you pay your cleaner??

Options
Hi all,

Hope you can help. We're looking for a cleaner. We have a 4 bedroom detached house (but new build so not massive), with a family bathroom, en suite shower room and downstairs cloakroom.

We just want someone to clean (dust, polish, vacuum, clean kitshcen and bathroom) each week, then clean windows inside every other week. We're hoping to pay a set fee basically for them to do it till they're finished instead of per hour but don't know what that fee should be??!

Is there anyone who has a cleaner who can give us some idea of what you pay yours at all?

Thanks in advance!

how long do you reckon it would take to clean? how long do you think it would take for the windows?

where about in the country are you?

I reckon maybe 2 hours in total? (just guessing though really!) We're in the northwest.

My mum goes to an elderly lady and cleans once a week, she charges £25 for 4 hours, and does what she can in that time. She is a mother of a friend though. My mum also doesn't work for a cleaning agency or anything and supplies all her own materials.. Through an agency it's usually per hour and anything between £8-£12 an hour, hope that helps :)

If you think someone could clean a four bed house with 2 bathrooms & do the windows every other week then you should set up your own cleaning business.

So that sounds like why you want to pay them a set fee rather than an hoursly rate.

You should pay someone what they deserve rather than how cheap you can get them to do it for as they won't stick with you.

We pay £10 an hour. I wouldn't want to work for less.

You need to have a realistic idea of the time it will take, and the best way to do that is to set aside a Saturday and do everything you want the cleaner to do, singlehanded without breaks or interruptions and time yourself. I'm quite a quick worker I think but I couldn't clean a 4 bed house top to bottom and wash windows in 2 hours. It would take me around that just to do the windows I think!

Other things to consider: where are you based. North of the country will be cheaper than South East. Do you have pets or children which might make things harder to clean? How tidy will the house be when she comes in.

If everything works in your favour, I'd say around £8 per hour based on how long you estimate it will take. Add £1 an hour for every issue I identified which applies to you.

We have a f bedroom home. The cleaner comes once a week for two hours and gets £16 in cash. But that leaves quite a lot of cleaning work to us to do.

A neighbour does cleaning in private houses (not through agency) and she gets between £8 - £10 per hour.

I'm confused by the first paragraph. Are you saying you don't think 2 hours is enough? I did say I was guessing, I'm really not sure myself.

As for trying to pay as little as possible, I'm really not. I just think it would be easier to ask someone to do what I need them to do and pay for that rather than pay them for a certain number of hours when they might not fit it all in that time or do it quickly and have lots of time left.

Maybe I'll need to go back to the idea of paying an hourly rate but it just seemed more practical to do it that way to ensure I get what I need doing done.

    Thanks though!

£8.00 per hour seems to be the going rate for a cleaner that doesn't work through an agency.
