Thanks for posting the photographs. From these it seems to have been a very serious accident. A scary record of what happened. I'm so glad your daughter is OK, it could have been so much worse.

I still can't believe she is ok. So thankful

The normal answer then would be that it couldn't have been off a blue car... but that doesn't mean it's not possible; it all depends if that is white paint or primer where the paint has been scraped off your daughters car leaving the primer underneath. The inner arch on display is also a bit of a giveaway that something has happened at the back.

Well I have spoken to several people who have had similar accidents and it seems they were all hit in that area and it sent them into a spin. I don't know if we will ever find out but we are just awaiting developments now and trying to contact the police again. We dont even know if there was cctv footage.

The backs pushed in, the wheel liner has been pushed out, and the boot no longer fits.
I'd put it down an crash damage I'm afriad.

It could also have received a hefty whack from another car. Her car went into the crash barrier front on, spun around and went front on into the crash barrier on the other side of the carriageway ending up wedged under it at the front. As far as I am aware during the actual spin nothing else struck her.

I know you all have your opinions from looking at the photos but it was the opinion of the recovery men who can see the damage first hand, that something struck her from behind.

OP - firstly glad your daughter is safe and well.

No one here can really on those facts give anyting other than an opinion on what might have happened. Unfortunately a nervous new driver will not have the experience to deal with such situations and understand how quickly things actually happen at 70mph. you did say she was in middle lane so presumably she was overtaking someone and hopefully not sitting there? Also the amnesia maybe should be looked at by a doctor in case of any blows to the head?

Unless any new evidence comes to light this will almost certainly be down on her insurance and I would say maybe leave a couple of thousand spare from car proceeds when buying new one to allow for next years insurance. A £7k car is a lot for a brand new driver who is bound to have a few knocks and scrapes (and unfortunately more in this case)

Does her insurance cover a hire car whilst hers is being assessed?

Finally as others ahave said a motorway lesson would be a good idea to help her confidence when she gets back on teh motorway and to understand more about road positioning etc which they don't teach you on lessons for your driving test

Although my daughter passed her test in July she does a round trip every day on the M2/M25 in the rush hour to and from work. She has not had so much as a scrape up the kerb or a scratch in that time and the car was completely unblemished. She has a lot of motorway experience but it was such a devastating accident that she was suffering from shock yesterday.

Did she buy or get sold GAP insurance? Check her paper work if she did then it is for the GAP insurance company to agree the write off value with the insurance.

Unfortunately when the car was bought the salesman tried to sell us GAP insurance but we declined it. Regret it now of course.

  • i would say your daughter had a very lucky escape, ive seen damage like that result in a car exploding into flames moments later because the battery damaged as like in your photo of it hanging out causing the posative to make conttact with ground +posative wires causing sparks to fly coupled with a pinched fuel pipe on the injector rail and results is bang, the young fella i helped had just managed to walk 20 feet before it caught fire in the engine bay and it quickly spread, had he been trapped i feared the worse could have happened although i would have given it my best to save him if that event had arose.

Yes, and an HGV could have come along and wiped her out completely, but thankfully it didn't.

Let's stick to what we KNOW happened and not get caught up in what COULD have happened. We're having a hard enough time trying to find out what DID happen.

Okay last post to sum up:

    Daughter thought she was hit.

Witness said she was hit by the BMW.

Recovery men's opinion she was hit from behind.

Husband's opinion after looking at car was that she was hit from behind. Found paint but could not tell colour as mashed up.

Mark on the back of the car.

Memory loss probably caused by bash on the head and shock, (Large cut and swelling on back of head) rather than blackout, sleep or not paying attention. Why do you all think otherwise?

Police officer said that she was a new driver and the wind probably caused it. Police officer talked over her and would not listen to what she was saying.

BMW driver stopped. Would not make eye contact with daughter. Everyone else who stopped was helpful and kind.

Daughter drives to work on 2 motorways every day to work.

Well, let's hope that they have the witness's contact details and can find the BMW again quickly - sounds like the BMW driver was at fault!
To be honest, I'd expect(if things are as cut and dried as you make out) for them to have processed the BMW driver at the scene for careless driving....
